It feels different around the farm tonight...

If you follow our page, you've seen us post about Tess, our Belgian Draft horse and her recent struggles over the last 6ish months. She's a retired Amish working horse and came to live with us for the last several years. Her body started to become restricted and tired earlier this year and we made a promise to her to keep her going as long as "she" wanted to. Several times she went down, but she put up a fight to get back up. Last night, she laid down and let us know she was ready to say goodbye... She didn't fight to get up. She didn't call out to us as she had before asking for help. She didn't rock herself trying to get the momentum to get back on her feet. We tried to motivate her just incase, because we weren't ready... but she just laid there. She was calm and had a sense of peace about her. I laid down with her and looked her in the eyes and told her it was going to be ok. She let out a deep breath as if she knew it was ok to let go... I strocked her face and knew it was time. I made the hard call to our vet and lost it for a moment knowing it was the last time we saw her standing... but I also knew as her care taker, it was my duty to let her go peacefully.

Animals are by law, property and by choice, family. We made a commitment to her to give her the best life that we could provide her. We also can take their pain away if we need to. We don't have to let them lay or struggle until they take their last breath. We can let them pass as she did resting and took her last breaths with us by her side.

Even though it's incredibly hard to say goodbye and a big piece of all of our hearts are gone, those rumbles in the sky today and the rain after you were gone made me think it was you up there running wild and free as you once were! We will miss you Tessi....

We plan to plant a shade tree over her final resting place in remembrance of her.

It's different on the farm tonight...

If you follow our page, or have visited the farm, you've read about or met Tess, our big Belgian Draft horse. She's a retired Amish working horse and came to live with us a few years ago. Earlier this year she began to struggle some with her tired sore body and began to have trouble getting up after she would lay down to rest. She would fight and call out for help and we'd get her back on her feet and off she'd go! We made a promise to her as long as "she" wanted to live, we'd do whatever we needed to keep her going and happy. Last night, she laid down and didn't get up. She didn't fight. She didn't winnie as if asking for help as she had done before. She didn't rock to get the momentum to get on her feet again. She laid there peacefully. I knew. I knew it was the last time I'd seen her on her feet. I laid down beside her and looked her in the eye's while kissing her big Ole face and told her it was ok... She took a big breath and let it out as if she knew it was ok to let go too. I made the call to our vet that no one wants to make, but knew it was what she needed and I then lost it... I knew I wouldn't see her standing in the morning. I knew it was going to be different tomorrow.

Animals are by law, property and by choice family. We have the ability and right to end their pain, suffering, or even the opportunity sometimes to let them go with dignity before they get bad. Tess, was letting us know. We knew we had to make good on our promise to her. We would not let her suffer and she was ready.

We plan to plant a remembrance tree in her final resting place. After she was buried this morning, I couldn't help but think the rumbles and rain were her running wild and free as she once did. Tessi, you were loved by many and took a BIG piece of our hearts...

Last year on Halloween morning, some of our cows wanted to get in on the fun and planned a great escape! Phone calls were coming in! Cows were missing! .....pumpkins and hay bales in dismay!!! Needless to say, they enjoyed themselves, but our neighbors weren't as amused... 🫣😣🤭
No Moo's were harmed and all were returned safely back to the farm. Pictures of their destruction were not taken for the sake of our neighbors and all pumpkins and hay bales were replaced in time for trick or treating! 😉

Happy Halloween folks!! If you're in our area, stop by for some trick or treating!! We'll be at the farm at 6pm hanging out by the fire pit and watching a movie.
