When doing senior photos and you get a double rainbow, you must capture the moment! Pagosa is notorious for rainbows. We are at the perfect altitude to get a rainbow nearly every time it rains in the summer.

It hailed for ten minutes with marble size chunks… but a little quick action and some towels saved the day! It was absolutely gorgeous after the storm passed for this amazing couples wedding!

I'm doing something new this year, fall minis!
Our colors change quickly, but I expect beautiful aspens the last weekend of September.

Bookings will be limited for Minis. These will be special, as normally I allow for the landscape to do the talking and have limited props in sessions. So, if you're looking for something cute and different, you will LOVE this! I haven't decided the official setup for the set/props, but it will be fall themed with autumn foliage, pumpkins, hay bales, blankets, etc.

As always, you can book a longer session for fall colors with me by going to www.northcreekphoto.com and selecting 'sessions'.

To book the mini session on SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 29TH click the following link:
https://northcreekphoto.pixieset.com/booking/fall-colors-mini

If the weather is not on our side / foliage isn't turning as quickly as normal, the backup day will be OCTOBER 5th.

As soon as I saw the picture of the fire 🔥 I knew the spot. Two years ago I took the fall colors photograph. I hope they are able to get the fire out quickly. It’s such a beautiful location. Details in comments.

Twin Lakes are a pair of glacier-carved alpine lakes about 15 miles south of historic Leadville, Colorado. They are downstream along the Arkansas River, whose headwaters are by Leadville, and they at the base of Colorado’s highest peak, Mt. Elbert. The naturally formed glacial lakes are Colorado’s largest, surrounded by mountains over 13,000 feet high.

This photo was taken just after the first snow of the season, on October 3rd, 2022.

Wow... this photo was taken with an iPhone, (hand held) of the aurora the second night of the huge storm we had a month ago. I haven't really had a chance to go through the images I took from those nights. Especially the iPhone photos that I pretty much write off as 'extras'. Just look at all the colors of the rainbow that showed up! Super cool.

Goes to show that you don't have to have a 'professional' setup to be able to get some pretty awesome shots. Here's your reminder to outside and find something beautiful.

Here’s an interesting comparison. I took each photo within 60 seconds of each other. One is iPhone in raw and the other is Canon R in cRAW. The colors and details are just so much richer with the ‘real’ camera but the iPhone isn’t too far off, especially since I was hand holding it.

Went and had a little chat with swan-solo this morning. He says he likes it when the balloons come by to say hi!
Swan-solo got his name because his mate was previously hit on the highway and he's been alone since. He had another swan visitor for about a week last month, but then it went away and our swan is back to being all alone. I'm always super sad to see him by himself, and so must half of Pagosa. He was featured in the The Pagosa Springs SUN newspaper when we thought he had found a new mate.

(All things are an assumption because he’s a local legend in Pagosa. No one really knows the truth. Some say it’s a HE. Some say his wings are clipped others say he leaves for two months a year. I’ve seen him here even when the lake is frozen. What I do know is he/she is solo.)

Q&A
Do I allow clients to pick their favorites or do I select them for them?

It’s been back and forth.
Generally it’s easier to pick the best and over deliver, but I also want them to have the photos they want and it saves me from doing extra work.

So I think I’m going to try and send out proofs after every shoot and see what happens.

Any other questions welcome. 🙏

I love that this almost looks like black and white, but it was just this way naturally! I was heading home from a photo shoot when I had to stop to watch the snow squall move over the mountains in the distance. Stormy weather is the best!

Aurora 10:39pm - 5/11- Click to see full HDR

I was literally giving up on seeing much of a show tonight from Pagosa, as the clouds were moving back in and the aurora just wasn’t popping off in time… I started to head back to my car when I decided to try one more photo. Just one. In 30 seconds, the sky went from kind of pink, to pillars of every color! I ran back to my spot and started getting as many images as I could. The show only lasted 5 minutes at most, but wow did it dazzle!

Looking W/SW at the moon over lake Vallecito. The aurora was completely overhead, stretching from east to west. That is something I never thought I'd see in SW Colorado! KP 9 storm.

NO COLOR ENHANCEMENT was done to this image!
I was photographing the 'Northern Lights' to the North/North East over lake Vallecito in SW Colorado, when I turned to my right and saw bright pink to the SE of me. I picked up my camera and pointed it at the sky to see what it would capture...
I still can't believe the aurora was over us this far south. Right after this image, I pointed my camera at the moon to the west, just to see if there was anything there, and to my surprise, there was! More photos to come later.
