"Complacency in the Workplace: What It Is and How to Resolve It"
Complacency in the workplace—when employees perform familiar tasks without focus or mindfulness—impacts more than productivity and quality. It can lead to serious safety issues. And research suggests it’s alarmingly common.
When workers become disinterested and just “go through the motions” of doing their jobs, they’re more likely to be careless and even take shortcuts. That can lead to problems with product quality which impact the customer experience or require rework. Either way, it negatively affects overall business performance.
To avoid preventable issues with safety, quality, employee engagement, and other impacts, managers should work to proactively keep employees focused—or at least recognize the signs of complacency and take action.
Here’s a look at what workplace complacency is, why it happens, how to spot it, and how to combat it.
