A few recent orders ✨

We’re in the height of late spring now, meaning all the fluffy petally highly-scented goodness is here! This weeks orders include the first garden roses, some of the last ranunculus, sweet pea and my favorite philadelphus. Enjoy!

Where did April go?

Here is a quick snapshot of everything that bloomed last month. Most notably the Ranunculus that were at least two weeks late and the garden roses and sweet pea that just popped up in the last week. With temperatures cooling again we’re shaping up to have a lovely Mother’s Day in the garden.

I rarely bring flowers in from the garden for myself (I prefer to leave them for you all and the pollinators) but I couldn’t help but cut some of these Ranunculus.

With the cool temperatures, they came on late this year and I fear they will end just as quickly as they came in the heat wave this week… so it’s time to get these girls to a good home!

And just like that, our season is coming to an end. Bewilder will be closing up for winter November 18th and will reopen when the flowers return in spring.

I’m also planning to take a break from this platform during that time to do a little screen time detox before bebe arrives. You would not believe some of the baby and pregnancy ads on here!

Happy Friday from a garden grown arrangement featuring my favorite rose—Julia’s Rose 🎃

There are still buds in the garden waiting to pop off but it won’t be for long! With the low temps and rain in the forecast, I’m anticipating closing up shop for the winter sometime before Thanksgiving. Just a lil reminder to enjoy things while they last 🥀

This is the last week I’ll be delivering to SF or the East Bay (maybe forever)

It’s bittersweet as this delivery route was one of my last ties to the place I first moved as an adult. A place I love with lots of people I love in it 💕 But onwards and upwards!

Get your orders in by Wednesday night for Thursday delivery!

I didn’t have a chance to mention this with the whirlwind of a year I’ve had—but my dahlias did surprisingly well this season! This one is ‘Giddy Up’ 🤠

Considering they ALL failed last year due to an irrigation issue I was too busy to notice with the double wedding schedule (thanks covid), the bar was low. But tubers I presumed dead came to life and made the most wonderful blooms.

They’re looking tired now but just wanted to share. Growing requires so much faith! Hang in there flower friends ❤️

09/28/2022

I wanted to share this for all the brides out there I have had to tell that the flower they loved would not be in season… turns out none of us are immune.

I had my heart set on white bougainvillea for our wedding and ordered a few plants from a local nursery thinking that I would cut from them for my bouquet and Scotty’s boutonnière. I was told they would likely not have flowers in July, but ordered them anyway. Sure enough they were completely barren.

With no florist in the nearby town, my options were roadside flowers and some week-old white lisi we had picked up in the last big town “just in case.” Both would have been *fine* but as I florist on her wedding day I wasn’t all that excited about it.

I think it was my Dad who first pointed out the most luscious floral scent in the evenings at the Villa where we stayed. We all went sniffing around various bushes the next morning only to find the mysterious scent had vanished.

Many fragrant flowers only release their scent at night in order to attract moths, so I knew I needed to bring a flashlight and search again once night fell.

Sure enough, growing high up on the next terrace, tangled up in some bushes, I found her—Sweet Autumn Clematis.

Somehow both delicate and wild in the same breath, as soon as I brought her into the light, I knew she would be my wedding flower.

The morning of my wedding, I climbed up a latter to cut down enough to create a cascading bouquet inspired by the bouquets in black and white images from 100 years ago. And a bit more to line our dinning table alongside the candles I had hauled in from home.

She fit the bill perfectly.

Past and future clients might be horrified to know just how often all too similar scenarios play out sourcing flowers here—with only slightly less drama. I place my orders to fulfill the design only to discover something so much more wonderful growing in my garden, or turn a corner at the market to come face to face with *the* perfect element.

Moral of the story, in flowers and in life, *not* having your heart set on something opens you up to the most wonderful surprises you never could have planned.

I could have guessed I would end up a florist after a trip to Switzerland when I was 17. I was so enchanted with all the delicate wild flowers that felt so different from the scrappy ones I had known in California, that I regularly lagged far behind the group, lingering to take pictures of each one.

Now, nearly half a lifetime later, it was very reaffirming to return and feel just as enthralled with them—only this time I knew all the names.

Sorry you’ve signed up for a lifetime of waiting on the trail as I take pictures of flowers 😅

Spring was nothing short of a whirlwind. Between all the wonderful couples I designed for and preparing for my own wedding, it’s gotten a little quiet here on the feed.

But I’m looking forward to a slower pace this summer 🏖

If you’re waiting on an email from me, I’ll be in touch shortly!

I was going to post some cute flower video today… but I can’t. I can’t sit by while children are slain and our politicians do nothing. Calling out all Republicans AND Democrats to say enough is enough. (Hasn’t it already been enough!?) Enact gun laws now and ensure this never happens again.

I’m *finally* ready to share here that I’ll be getting married to my love of 7 years in less than 2 months!

So I’ve been feeling extra tender towards all my brides on their wedding days lately 🥹

Thank you to for coming to our home and taking pictures of us to commemorate this time in our lives.

From selecting the clay, to throwing the vessels and firing each one with care, to planting the seeds, nurturing the soil and feeding each plant, these were made with so much love and joy and I hope your mamas are feeling that love today.

Happy Mothers Day! Thank you so much to everyone who ordered from our garden 🌿

Hey there! Just your friendly neighborhood florist stopping by to remind you that 90% of flowers sold in the US are imported.

This means costly carbon emissions, extra chemicals and underpaid labor. Meanwhile local flowers promote biodiversity, feed pollinators, support small businesses and even help sequester carbon. Plus the stems are usually more unique and natural looking!

The choice seems obvious and yet many farms struggle to sell through their crops. Please ask your florist for local flowers (perhaps via ), buy from florists on directories such as or , or buy direct from farmers markets or flower CSAs.

Thanks for listening, please tell a friend✌️🐝🌸

Field Notes no. 1 : February 2022 : New Beginnings

{Here’s a snippet from my monthly emails, sign up at bewilderfloral.com to follow along with my seasonal happenings and reflections}

This time of year in the garden always feels full of promise. Not quite the dark and withdrawn feeling of the true cosmic new year, on the winter solstice, but just a few months of shifting towards the light later feels like a new year unto itself.

The first flowers, hellebore, daffodil, and anemone are showing their faces to world after their slumber. The roses are putting on leaves that feed the most opulent layered petals. The seedlings I’ve planted out are dutifully at work underground putting out roots.

It’s all so full of hope. And I feel myself ready to unwind from winter’s cocoon.

Looking back, 2021 was a whirlwind for me, and I want to apologize for any texts or emails I left unanswered. As many of you know I more or less entirely had to shut down the retail program as I got swept up in wedding work. And while it was a joy to be a part of long-awaited celebrations that had been postponed during the lock-down. The sudden gear shift meant that many things I hold near and dear got neglected—including my beloved garden.

It also expedited the need for a hand surgery that I had been avoiding for years—which put me out of commission for a full 6 weeks in the middle of my growing season.

All of this culminated in the recognition that I need to do things a little differently.

I knew in my heart two things. One, I loved working in my garden and the joy of connecting my neighbors to local flowers. Two, I needed to take a break from weddings for the sake of my mind and body.

I’m proud to share that last year roughly 95% of our flowers came from local sources, and many weddings, like the one this centerpiece belonged to, we’re 100% local. This is thanks in large part to Gather Flora]

Before Gather, I would eagerly await each local farms availability list, compose my list of flowers as quickly as possible and send in my requests only to be told that this or that was not available in the quantities I needed. I would order as much as I could, drive for hours to pick up the flowers and ultimately have to supplement with imports.

This past year with Gather, I could browse the availability of multiple farms in one place and knew exactly what I was getting in one easy check out process. Game changer for sourcing local!

Making sure I’m sourcing local is a big deal for me. Not only is the product more unique, I’m supporting local women run businesses and biodiversity in our region. Importing flowers is a huge source of carbon and I can rest easy knowing I’m not adding to it.

All this to say, Gather Flora] is raising money to open another stall at the LA flower market so that LA farms and florists can enjoy the same local connection we enjoy here. I hope you’ll join me in supporting their efforts through the link in my bio 🙏🏼

Yes! For those of you who have been asking, the stars have aligned for me to offer a *very limited* run of Valentine’s arrangements ✨

These are the first flowers of the year, a sultry mix of hellebore, anemone, virburnum and snowdrops that are a wee bit early this year due to these warm days. And perhaps a lil surprise from . 100% local!

Order them as a bouquet or in my first run of ceramic vessels, I’ve been designing over the off season to work without the need for mechanics.

Pick up any day in Palo Alto or I’ll be making a delivery run to SF and Oakland area on Friday. Orders close at 9 am on Thursday. Head to my link in bio 😘

My favorite arrangements remind us of the unusual beauty of nature, rather than shaping nature into our likeness.

This one is composed of a rare January rose and Japanese anemone seed pods. It was the first arrangement I felt compelled to make for my own enjoyment for months. I placed in the hallway and enjoyed watching its delicate decay as I passed each day.

Also spotted this week: hummingbirds grabbing these fluffy seed pods in their tiny beaks to build their nests. So glad to have time to be out in the garden again!

Hands down, my favorite kind of wedding is just your 20 closest people in a beautiful place and built in time to relax and enjoy. During the pandemic, this wasn’t most couples first choice, but I’m starting to think it should be.

Bonus points for a creative couple that pulls inspiration for the natural surroundings ✨ Congrats L + N!

Don’t forget! January 26th is the last day to sign up for the centerpiece workshop.

Learn the process and principles to consistently design beautiful centerpieces that express your creative voice. Max will be in conversation with you through this in-person workshop at his studio in Emeryville. You’ll learn technique but also about Max’s own inspiration sources, creative journey and evolution of style to help you hone your own.

Max’s core principles and methods of floral design are informed by natural process, specialty blooms, and botanical rarities gleaned from local growers. We will employ a limited palette and minimal elements to focus on building a solid spatial foundation for floral design that can scale from the centerpiece to complex installations.

Can you believe we're already a week into December?!

Here's a healthy reminder from our founder, Hannah Brannan, in this busy time of year to slow down and take a deep breath. It's good to remember what brought us to this work in order to stay present and grounded in the most hectic of times.

From her interview with 🙏
