From the Executive Director:

I hate posting negative things, but for those that don't know, Meals on Wheels providors across the state experienced a HUGE budget cut this year. To give you perspective for ours, one of our programs went from being reimbursed for 10,000 meals a month to just 5000. That's about $30,000 per month. This is the biggest cut we've seen in the 10 years I've worked at HRC. A BIG reason for the decrease was the end of COVID funding, but regardless, we have to make this money up somewhere.

We need your HELP. Please consider sponsoring Mardi Gras, or consider getting tickets or a table. For info, email [email protected] or message me.

Where are all my Silent Santa’s? It’s that time again to be a blessing to the elderly home bound that just want a Christmas Eve dinner. Most of you will know, this is my favorite event that we do each year.

This year December 24 falls on Tuesday

Kitchen help will need to be in the kitchen at 9:00 to start building meals for delivery.

Volunteer drivers need to sign up at this link or call the Human Resources Council of Lamar County for more information.

Why the picture? Cause they are just so pretty. Ribeyes steak dinner for 28 tonight. Hand cut ribeyes with baked potato, salad, and a dinner roll. One more gig tomorrow and that’s it for P&G.

Many of you have asked me, just where is your favorite place to eat bbq?
If you’ve never been to Hutchins Barbeque then you are completely missing out on a true bbq experience. As I’ve said in previous posts, I judge a restaurant on sliced brisket and sides. I’ve been to Hutchins several times and their brisket has always been consistently tender and moist, with just the right amount of smoke to my liking. My favorite side item is always the broccoli salad but the jalapeno pintos are a great complement to their brisket if you like a little spice in your life.
While there you have to treat yourself to their iconic Texas Tw***ie. It’s their take on the bacon wrapped stuffed jalapeño that will keep you thinking about it for weeks after eating.
For dessert, make a trip to the dessert bar full of banana pudding, peach cobbler, and the machine full of vanilla and chocolate ice creams.
I have been to other “Top” bbq restaurants but when asked where my go-to place is for bbq, it’s always Hutchin’s with two locations. The original in McKinney and their second store in Frisco. I honestly think about the experience for weeks after eating there.

Well folks that’s it. We just completed our last catering event on the calendar. We have been asked, “why are you quitting? You are doing so good.” Well we could cater every weekend if we wanted to and we almost did in 2023 but we are ready to do something else as I get closer to retiring from my full time job.
Lamar county, and even a few folks outside the county have been so good to us. Y’all have supported us from day one and I can not put into words what that means to us.
Please don’t unfollow us just yet. We are working with some folks to have some special events in the future that will support our favorite event each year; Christmas Meals on Wheels.

Thanks again for showing up to eat and loving our food so much.

Hello folks. As all of our followers know by now, we will be closing the doors to the business at the end of the year. Our followers will also know about our Christmas Meals on Wheels we started back in Dec 2017. To help sustain this project going forward we have worked with Shelly at Human Resources Council to create an online store to sell t-shirts that reflect this special annual event. Thanks to Print Works of Paris to help get this set up. I ask you to take the time to click the link below and purchase a shirt to help us fund this project year after year. (Would make nice Christmas presents).

Thank you for all of your support over the past few years and joining us to help make someone’s Christmas a little brighter.

It’s 6:00am and briskets need to get done. Next year I’ll be getting up this early to go fishing. I’ll miss the cooking but I won’t miss the cooking. Looking forward to fishing and working with the grandson on his 1966 F100 shortbed pickup.

This will be the first in a series of Texas Bbq reviews. I plan to travel around and try bbq joints around Texas to let our followers make a sound decision to stop or not. Now I’m no expert but I’ve cooked a few and eaten a few briskets in my days and my opinion can vary greatly from yours but here we go.

Let’s start in Richland Hills at The Patriot Pig BBQ. Right off the bat you get an indication what these folks are about. True American patriots wholly endorsing patriotism and the 2nd Amendment. But I digress. We’re here for the bbq.

When you step into the building you take a hard left for the line and you’re greeted with an extra large menu. Make your choice/choices and step up to the butcher block for the meat. You will notice I will be primarily critiquing the brisket. If you like ribs, sausage, pork or turkey then that’s your choice but for me I don’t venture off my sliced beef path very often.
Take a look at the photo. I picked the slice up with my fork to display tenderness and it did not disappoint. I never want mine to fall apart but I don’t want to chew it like a piece of Hubba Bubba either. To me it was cooked just perfect. Now this is my second time here. The first time I selected the cowboy beans and the German style potato salad. This time I went for the loaded baked mashed potatoes and the deviled egg potato salad. With all of that said then I recommend the beans and loaded mashed potatoes. Step up to the counter and you’re greeted by a friendly staff to offer your choice of sauce. Believe me, the brisket can stand alone with its crispy black peppery bark but the sauce is good. I had to try the spicy this time. It had a small bite just to warm your taste buds but did not kill them so you get the full flavor marriage of sauce and meat. The sides are served in plastic containers with lids available if you need to carry home any leftovers. Those of you that know me know that I didn’t need lids. 😆

Not my favorite place (again, if you know me you know my favorite) but definitely my go to joint when I have to work at the office. Plus, I will support those that support our country. Stop by and give them a try if you’re ever around the Fort Worth or Richland hills area. Tell them Pittin and Grillin sent you.
