When I say “Eucomis”
You say “What?!”
And that’s pretty much how it goes 😜
What else should we call these unique and wonderful plants?
Pineapple lily is more descriptive for sure. Any other suggestions?
Ps a stem will last in a vase for a month! That are magic that way!

I LOVE the Rudbeckia this year! I was t going to grow it because it needs such a long lead time (and cool weather) but it is lovely and so tall! Nice send off for our move 😊

See this gorgeous plant? One of the Compulsive Gardeners brought in cuttings of this Stargazer Hydrangea to share with the group. Thats just one of the many benefits of being a member. I admit I’m feeling a little tender like this rose bud. I don’t know how many people will be visiting my little backyard flower farm tomorrow and I’m humbled at the overwhelming interest. I’m excited to share my flower babies and I hope I get everything ready in time! Wish me luck!

The first flush of blooms is always the most spectacular! The roses are going to shine for the flower farm tour this Saturday! Tickets are all taken but you could come volunteer (PLEASE! I love this tapestry of self sown nasturtiums. They hold up beautifully in a vase, make a wonderful ground cover and attract pollinators. The fact that you can eat them -flowers stuffed with whipped cream cheese are fantastic- is icing on the cake. Can you tell I’m smitten?

The last class before we leave for Germany for 2 years! We’ll learn about heirloom chrysanthemums and the foundational gardening skill of taking cuttings. Students will take cuttings from my extensive collection of florist chrysanthemums to take home. I’ll have a lot of plants to sell in anticipation of our big move. Roses, bearded Iris, potted chrysanthemums, lisianthus, eucomis (pineapple lily), gardening supplies (a titan sweet pea tunnel!), and more! Space is limited so register early.

Dutch Iris! Planted the bulbs (6” deep!) two years ago and thought they just didn’t like our climate. This year I’ve got beautiful flowers! Lesson in gardening- patience helps!

First blooms on clematis vines- now I can attach the right labels! A crow or some other critter removed all the la els from the six plants I’d bought. It’s been an exercise in patience trying to figure out which is which.

If you are growing sweet peas, how are yours doing?
I had to leave these beauties to head to Mazatlan for a better view of Mondays eclipse. Not sorry about it! Not much here by way of beautiful botanicals but we plan to do some exploring this afternoon and I’ll share what I find.

It’s time! Disbud this chrysanthemums! Even though my work means I’ve got minutes instead of hours with my flowers I make time for this because the difference later is BIG.

I haven’t had much time lately to tend, harvest, market, sell flowers. I’m glad to see that this ecology I’ve cultivated can do it’s own thing :)
