An Orange County cemetery might not seem like a place to discover new life, but Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana is full of lively wild plants, birds and animals. Today, Fairhaven is home to over 70 different species of trees along with hundreds of species of birds — so many that on the second Saturday of every month, Alvarez and naturalist Joel Robinson of Naturalist-for-You lead a nature walk through the Santa Ana cemetery.

Fairhaven's joint-venture with Naturalist-for-You guides hikers through the memorial park's 75 different species of trees and the birds they attract.

This process, also known as "natural organic reduction," involves placing the body in a vessel with wood chips, mulch, wildflowers and other organic materials, where it is then transformed over about 45 days. The resulting soil can be used for gardening or placed in a meaningful location.

When Robert Beck, a New York-based painter and author who portrays life on the Upper West Side, inquired about painting at Riverside Memorial Chapel, he quickly determined that he needed to depict Charles Solomon. Charles is President of Riverside, where he has spent his entire career, spanning about 60 years. A true funeral professional, he has dedicated his life to serving families when he’s needed the most.

It was clear halfway through my tour that whatever my depiction, it had to have Mr. Salomon in it.
