Below is an excerpt from December’s publication of The Qwill by Richard Kenyon. (A Christmas Carol will be performed this Thursday, Dec. 12 at 7pm!)

As we enter the Christmas season, I’m reminded of the first time I encountered Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Like many Canadian kids, I first saw it through Alistair Sim’s 1951 film adaptation, which I watched many years later on TV, on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). Even on a 20-inch screen in black and white, with a fuzzy picture, this elegant film captivated my 10-year-old self.

Sim’s portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge is truly wonderful. He perfectly captures the miserly, grumpy Scrooge we all know, while also imbuing the character with a depth of humanity that makes his transformation all the more compelling. The film, with its slightly darker and moodier tone, stands apart from other adaptations. The eerie, spectral encounters Scrooge has with the three ghosts are haunting, creating a sense of unease that lingers long after the scenes end. But it is Sim’s performance that truly elevates this version.

A timeless tale of redemption. We are all transformable. At the start, he is the epitome of greed and cynicism—a man who scoffs at the very notion of Christmas. Yet, after his supernatural visitors show him the error of his ways, his transformation feels both profound and believable. The sincerity with which Sim portrays Scrooge’s shift from cold-hearted miser to joyful benefactor reignites a sense of wonder and reminds us of the magic of Christmas. […]

We invite you to join us for our 2nd Annual staged reading of A Christmas Carol, a holiday tradition that continues to bring this beloved story to life. Also, after the show, we will announce our 6th season of staged readings.

The Shakespeare Villa is home to The Shakespeare Club of Pasadena

The Shakespeare Club, established in 1888, is the one of the first women’s club in Southern California. Originally created for literary study with Shakespeare as its first author, the women quickly became involved in civic improvement and philanthropic needs. What makes The Shakespeare Club so different from other women’s philanthropic organizations? Our rich history, our decades of friendship, and our unique way of raising money to fund our many philanthropic endeavors. For over a half century we have presented full scale Broadway Musicals and donated the proceeds to many local charities.
