Corey Phelan was a high school senior in the spring of 2020 at Harborfields High School. He was a promising young left handed pitcher who was looking forward to his last season of high school ball. As we all remember, that wasn’t the greatest time for the world and many things were shut down. That included spring sports. Despite missing that season, Corey still aspired to continue his baseball journey and while he wasn’t drafted he did receive about 9 offers to play college ball. He decided he would attend Flagler College and pitch for the Saints baseball team. That summer a scout from the Philadelphia Phillies reached out to Corey and made him an offer. He asked Corey, “Do you want to pitch for Flagler or do you want to pitch for the Phillies?” and of course, the opportunity of a life time was too much to pass up.
Being that the world was still shut down, there was no minor league baseball season in 2020 and Corey would have to wait a year to start his minor league journey. Everything, including his contract signing, was done remotely. His family set up his contract signing photo shoot in their kitchen and his mom, Christie made a very cool Phillies backdrop from a bed sheet and some pictures she printed out online. They made it official and Corey Phelan was now a signed member of the Philadelphia Phillies organization.

Tom Downey, the local scout for the Phillies then reached out to another local baseball star who had started his journey a few years earlier. Logan O’Hoppe was drafted by the same Phillies out of St John’s High School and he was somewhat familiar with Corey as they had played within the same travel ball circles, albeit in different age groups. They met again and a bond quickly grew. They worked out at the same gym in the off season and worked together tirelessly to prepare for the 2022 season. The pairing was natural as Logan was a promising rising star catcher who had gotten as high as AAA the previous season and Corey was a left handed pitcher who had just completed a season in the Phillies instructional league. Corey was like the little brother that Logan had never had.
That spring they travelled to Clearwater FL to prepare for the upcoming season.

It was then that the Phelan Family’s lives would change forever. After a workout one day Corey passed out in the shower and was rushed to the hospital. It was there that they found a large mass in his chest was was putting pressure on his lungs. When Corey woke in his hospital room, his Dad, Chris was by his side. Corey, unaware of his prognosis asked his Dad what was wrong. It was then that Chris Phelan had to tell his son that the doctors told him that he has cancer.
“Are they sure?” Corey asked.
With what strength he had, Chris had to repeat that they were sure to which Corey responded
“Dad, it’s OK, God has me”.

Through is all, Corey never waivered. His treatment at Sloan was done in the Pediatric Cancer ward as Corey was still just 19 years old. It was there that he met so many young warriors fighting their own battles with this hideous disease. Corey told his parents “I’m going to beat this and make it to the major leagues one day and make a lot of money. I want to give all of that money to these kids so they don’t have to worry about anything other than getting better”.
That was Corey’s Promise.

Throughout his treatment, he inspired so many people around him, including members of the Phillies organization like Larry Bowa, Charlie Manuel, Preston Mattingly and Dicky Noles. These former major leaguers would regularly visit Corey in the hospital just to talk baseball and all were amazed at his strength, his poise and most of all, his faith.

In his final days as he was losing his battle he was more worried about getting Phillies memorabilia to a young fan than he was about his own mortality.
Corey lost his battle in October of 2022, just 6 months after his initial diagnosis. The Phelan family has shown amazing bravery through it all and began their foundation, Corey’s Promise to continue on the work that their son wasn’t able to. In just over a year they have raised and distributed over $80,000 to families going through their own battles.

As I said, I never had the honor of meeting Corey Phelan, but his story has changed my life. We take so much for granted every day. No matter what we are dealing with, no matter how tough things get, we can all remain strong and inspire others.

If you can join us on Wednesday to celebrate Corey, we would love to see you. Logan OHoppe will be there, and he will continue fighting on through his own baseball journey keeping his little brother in his heart always.
