Some folks have asked why it takes so long to get their wedding film done. No worries! We’re here to answer all of those questions. Here is a small breakdown as to why getting you your edited wedding film takes so much time.

1. Editing Time: Its not necessarily the amount of time it takes to actually edit the film. The actual editing editing time only takes a couple of work days. As you’ll see from the next few bullet point, it’s mostly about how long it takes to get to the footage.

2. Copying: The time it takes to actually copy footage alone is could be around 1.5 to 3 hours. That is from the camera card to the computer. In addition to that, the footage needs to be backed up to a second hard drive which takes the same amount of time.

3. Raw Exporting: At JL Wedding Films, we supply every client with their raw footage, so this also takes several hours to complete. The footage is compiled into an MPEG file straight to you, so it acts as a back up on the cloud, while also being able to be used by the client to view.

4. Hard Drive Space: In the mix of copying and exporting, space must be made for upcoming and current projects. This is also a process that takes about 1-2 workdays.

5. The Queue: After this process is done, well its to get to editing the actual highlight films. Except, there is always a back catalog reaching back usually about 2 months. This is where the real delay comes in. With all the time and resources, and list of things to do, it takes typically about 2-3 months to get to edit a wedding that happened 2-3 months prior if it’s busy season. In winter/spring this time is usually a bit shorter. It’s more like a month and a half to two months.

6. Editing Time: Once it comes time to edit your film, the footage actually requires additional rendering to make the process smooth and efficient. After that, its smooth sailing. The editing process takes about 1 to 2 business days.

7. Savings and Cost: At JL Wedding Films, we only have a small team of editors and a few work stations which in turn, keeps the cost down for the client. If we had a large editing department, then yes, we could get your film out much quicker. But we pride ourselves in delivering a quality product at a cost friendly rate. This is why we prefer to keep it small. At least for now.

It's easier to secure your dream venue . Venues have much more availability on weekdays

You'll save on your reception hall and catering. All vendors offer less for weekdays.

You can cut down your guest list. Allot of guests might take a pass. This could be a pro OR a con!

Your guests have more flexibility when traveling. Weekday flights are typically less money and if your guests are taking off for the week anyway, then it offers more flexibility.

Opt for a Standing Ceremony to with the exception of elderly family members.

Follow Vendors on Social Media for Discounts. Like this one!

Have Your Ceremony and Reception at the Venue.

Use your favorite market for caterings. Some markets like Wholefoods offer catering services.

Provide your own alcohol. It sounds crazy but even if you purchase allot it, it could still be cheaper.

Create signs for menus and table cards instead of individual pieces of paper.

Rent or buy a fake cake for the cake cutting and then have your baker make your actual cake for serving.

Why first look?

It calms the nerves before the ceremony

Reactions and moments can be captured by the photo team.

It allows more time flexibility to do a photo session with your photographer

It makes for better candid genuine photos of the the bride and groom.

It warms up your bridal party and family for photo taking

It enables couples to enjoy their cocktail hour instead of taking photos after their ceremony.

It makes for a great scene on video in your highlight reel!

In conclusion, I always steer couples in the direction of a first look if they’re early in the planning process for these reasons. At the end of the day, we always try to steer the couple in the direction of their priority, and if your priority is private time plus great photo’s and mingling, then a first look is the way to go.

What extra angles and shots should your associate videographer and photographers get?

Some packages come standard with a second photographer or videographewr

So what shots should these professionals get throughout the day ?

The associate photographer usually starts with the groom prep.

Following the groom prep, their task is usually to get extra angles for the ceremony.

Such as one bride angle of the bride and groom each during vows and rings.

One also might get guest reaction shots during the ceremony.
The associate videographers job is typically to start out with groom prep as well.

In addition the associate videographer might get another angle of the first look.

For the ceremony the associate video gets extra angles just like associate photo may get.

In many cases , one professional might be assigned to get the “wide” angle of whats going on and the other may be in charge of the “tight” angle.

Meaning one would get shots of a whole room and allot of people, and the other would get shots of subjects from the waste up.

For the remainder of the event , both professionals may cover numerous angles and extra shots.
