🚨 Paxico Blues Nation: Lineup announcement 🚨
We are proud to announce the heavyweight champion Akeem Kemp Band will be playing this year’s Paxico Blues Festival on Saturday, September 21. Mr. Kemp is a crowd favorite, if you know, you know; if you don’t, come find out why!

International Blues Challenge finalist Akeem Kemp is a natural prodigy who is a singer, guitarist, and songwriter from Arkansas. He grew up performing in a gospel quartet, but branched out as a blues solo artist releasing his first album, “I Like It All,” followed by his second album, “A Woman Needs Love,” right after high school. Influenced by Albert King’s string bending and soulful, smoky vocals as well as Jimi Hendrix’s overdriven amplifiers with high volume and gain, Akeem has managed to create his own style and unique tone.

Through the inspiration of life experiences, he uses his music to connect with all walks of life. Akeem is on a journey to create memories, conceive feelings, and communicate lyrics people may feel they cannot say any other way except through music. Do. Not. Miss. This.

We will be announcing the additional artists this week so stay tuned. See ya in Paxico! www.PaxicoBluesFest.com

Don’t miss Bombino tomorrow night at Volland, A Place for Art and Community. Amazing that a world renowned artist will be playing in our community! Please support the show and their mission!

Welcome back to ‘Discover Bombino: The Tuareg Folk Hero’, Volland’s series highlighting Bombino’s rich history and background! Each day until October 14 we’ll be posting more of Bombino’s story of his musical journey from the desert to the world stage. On October 14, Bombino will perform at Volland! Read on for Day 5: Bombino is discovered!

Fast forward to 2009 when Bombino met filmmaker Ron Wyman of Zero Gravity Films. Wyman had heard a cassette of Bombino’s music while traveling near Agadez, leading Wyman to seek out Bombino for over a year, finally finding him exiled by the Nigerien government forces in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Wyman, while in Ouagadougou, featured Bombino in a documentary about the Tuareg and later that year, he invited Bombino to Cambridge, MA to record ‘Agadez’ in Wyman’s home studio. ‘Agadez’ was released in April 2011 on
Cumbancha Records and received worldwide acclaim and tours between 2011 and 2012!

In January 2010, on the occasion of Tuaregs lowering arms and being allowed to return to Niger, Wyman came to Agadez to finish the album and film with Bombino. In one of many historically significant moments in Bombino’s career, the sultan of Agadez allowed Wyman and Bombino to organize a concert for peace at the base of the Grand Mosque, the first time a performance of that nature had been permitted. This concert and celebration drew over 1,000 people to celebrate the end of the second Tuareg rebellion – everyone dancing, singing, and celebrating peace at the edge of the Sahara.

Much of the information from this series is from Wyman's 2010 documentary Agadez, the Music and the Rebellion (1h 15m) where Bombino was interviewed about his life and musical journey.

Tune in tomorrow for more about Bombino’s musical journey and why his concert at Volland is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Want to read more? Head to Bombino’s website and read his bio and all about his new album, Sahel. Tickets will be available at the door but don’t wait until the day of- reserve yours today and follow along until the concert. We can’t wait to see you there!

Tomorrow...“utterly, utterly fantastic”

🤠Message From the Sheriff🤠

Howdy there, it’s the Sheriff here.
Like a Mill Creek spring, let’s make a few things clear.
All are welcome to Paxico the third Saturday in September.
But first, a few important things to remember.

When you’re in Paxico we treat you all like our sisters and brothers.
So respect one another because we’re all Blues lovers.
The Flint Hills are majestic, so respect them too.
And leave all around you better than when it was handed it to you.

We learn many lessons from those here first, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation tribe.
Remember to preserve, value, and keep their culture alive.
We’re a small group of people giving you this big thing for free.
So when that donation bucket comes around we thank you for your generosity.

We support the artists, the community, and a real good hootenanny too.
So dance, eat, antique, and make a new friend or two.
The Blues is one of Americas greatest art forms and we’ll never let it fall.
One Nation, Under the Blues, with Liberty and Justice for All.

Dubiously yours,

The Sheriff

🗞️ 🚨 Late Breaking News!!! 🚨🗞️
The Voice contestant Kara McKee will be joining us on the stage for the Paxico Blues Festival this Saturday Sep 16!

Described as having “smart and cool” musicality by EGOT award winner John Legend, Kara McKee’s soulful voice has been heard in a range of settings from sold out shows at renowned Club Passim to audiences of dignitaries including FLOTUS Michelle Obama.

Kara is a Rhode Island based singer-songwriter who delivers heartfelt stories punctuated with clear and dynamic vocals, drawing on influences ranging from Lori McKenna to Susan Tedeschi to every one of the Traveling Wilburys.

In 2022 Kara made her television debut on NBC’s The Voice, earning a coveted spot on Team Legend with her rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock”. Blake Shelton remarked that Kara “tore down a wall” by winning John Legend over with her folk rock / Americana style.

In 2023, Kara recorded her highly anticipated debut EP, “Enough” at the Sound Emporium in Nashville, TN. The first single from the project, “Niall”, is also the first song Kara wrote after resigning from her corporate career to pursue her musical dreams… she sings the word “happy” 7 times.

Down in Memphis this year for the International Blues Competition one artist blew the roof off of every venue she played, and left everyone wanting more. Kelli Baker Music is one of the hottest blues acts on the planet and she’s coming to Paxico on Sep. 16.

Kelli Baker is the driving force behind New York’s powerful original blues/rock band, The Kelli Baker Band. Signed under Sony Music with Bad Jeu Jeu Records, the Kelli Baker Band recently completed a wildly successful national tour.

The Kelli Baker Band won the Long Island Blues Society “Road to Memphis” competition in October of 2022, and was sent to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge in January of 2023. They recently recorded at Cove City Sound Studios with Richie Cannata (Billy Joel, Lords of 52nd St) and John Arbuckle (Justin Bieber, Jon Bellion).

With a powerhouse voice dripping with a haunting sensuality that slips easily into growling old school blues-tones, Kelli speaks her heart like a beat poet in a late night dive. The kind you only know if you’re in the know. Her music is an amalgamation of authentic blues/rock and heart-on-her-sleeve singer/songwriter pop with folk/gospel roots.

Kelli has recently completed two successful national tours, topped off with performing in Paris, France. Now performing with The Kelli Baker Band, she appears regularly at iconic music houses such as NYC’s The Bitter End, taking the stage at The Cutting Room, Rockwood Music Hall, and some of New York’s most discerning venues.

There’s only one place in the world you’ll want to be on Sep. 16 @ 6:30pm: the Paxico Blues Fest to see Kelli take the stage. Learn more at https://www.kellibaker.com and do not miss the opportunity to see this shooting star.

Huge news, we are so grateful to have the renowned Kara Grainger joining us for the Paxico Blues Fest on Sep. 16! Kara Grainger’s music career began in a small suburban town of Sydney, Australia and has taken her on an incredible journey throughout the globe. Combining slide guitar, soulful vocals and a heartfelt approach to songwriting, Kara's truly unique sound will leave you uplifted, inspired and always wanting more.

At the age of 16 Kara joined with her brother Mitch Grainger to form the band "Papa Lips". The band toured consistently throughout Australia and produced two studio albums that received national air play. The band was heavily influenced by the sounds of Stax recording in Memphis, and by the Funky style of blues and soul that derived from New Orleans.

Her debut solo album entitled "Grand and Green River" received critical acclaim and remained in the top 30 of the Americana Charts for 38 straight weeks. Since then Kara has made three further albums whilst residing in the US. In 2011 "LA Blues" was recorded live at Studio City Sound. The cd paid tribute to some of Kara's earliest blues inspirations and in 2013 kara recorded and released"Shiver and Sigh" through Los Angeles record label "Eclecto Groove." The album was produced by grammy award winning producer David Z with some of LA's finest musicians, including Mike Finnigan, Hutch Hutchinson, James Gadson and Kirk Fletcher among others.

She has traveled to Indonesia for the Jakarta International Blues Festival and to Japan opening for "The Swampers and Donnie Fritts", the infamous house Rhythm section for "Fame Recordings" in Muscle Shoal. The band has also toured in Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and Spain. In the US Kara has performed everywhere from 'The Portland Waterfront Blues Festival', 'Blues from the Top' in Colorado and "Austin City Limits". She has also opened the show for many extraordinary acts such as Peter Frampton, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal and Jonny Lang, to name a few.

Learn more about Kara at http://www.karagrainger.com and be sure you take the opportunity to see this international star in the Flint Hills on Sep. 16 @ 4:30pm!

08/23/2023

We are so honored to have Maria The Mexican join us for this year’s Paxico Blues Fest on Sep 16! Influenced by traditional Mariachi music, Maria The Mexican is a mezcla of Mexican folklore and Rock n’ Roll. For ten years, Maria Elena Cuevas performed with her grandmother’s mariachi band Mariachi Estrella. In 2012, Maria connected with longtime Alt-R&B musician Garrett Nordstrom to form the fusion of Maria The Mexican. MTM is mixed with a touch of blues, soul, funk, and rock n’ roll enhanced by the musical knowledge and sounds of Nordstrom. With a southwestern flare and melancholy motifs, Maria The Mexican rocks it out in Spanish and English with a host of emotion.

For Maria the Mexican principal Maria Elena Cuevas it’s not about her…then again, it is. The band is actually named for Maria and sister Teresa (Tess) Cuevas’ grandmother, Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas, a pioneer in Mariachi who in the 70s founded Mariachi Estrella, one of the first all-female Mariachi bands in the US. The band eventually performed for more than 30 years but tragedy struck Mariachi Estrella in 1981 when seven members were killed in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse in Kansas City.

Following the accident and grandmother Maria’s recovery the band resumed performing and in the late 90s granddaughters Maria and Tess, who learned Mariachi and other traditional Mexican music from their grandmother, performed with her in Mariachi Estrella as youngsters – Maria singing and playing guitar and vihuela, Tess singing and playing violin. Perhaps the most important musical legacy of Mariachi Estrella’s final years after the Hyatt tragedy was the indelible imprint placed on the Cuevas sisters by the experience of performing traditional Mexican music with their grandmother.

Learn more about Maria the Mexican at https://www.mariathemexican.com and check them out live at the Paxico Blues Fest on Sep 16 @ 12:30pm!
