I love amaranth. And I really wanted to grow it. Last year I scattered about 5 seed packets in one of my garden beds and only 3 plants came up.
Disappointed with how expensive the seeds were and only 3 plants came up- I decided to save seeds and see what happens.
So I saved about a half cup of them. Shared some with a friend and kept some for myself.
I conducted an experiment. I planted a full tray of the seeds I saved and one of the store seeds.
To no surprise at all- my seeds came up and the store purchased ones are no where to be seen.
Seed saving can be a tedious task but incredibly worth it.
Give it a try this growing season.

Every friend of mine that has chickens has been struggling with their chickens. To be honest so was I. So I decided to try a few things.
1- I added this solar light in my coop. I put it on a timer to turn on at 6am and turn off at sunrise. Then I turned it on again at sunset and let it stay on until 8:30pm.
2- I changed the feed. Like most, I purchased my feed from my local big box. Eventually I learned that I have a local mill that has a high protein and all natural feed. So I purchased 26% protein chicken feed.
3- cleaned out the coop and put in clean shavings on the ground and new bedding in the nesting boxes.
4- made sure my chickens had access to clean fresh water daily. So during the week the temps were under 10, I would take a gallon jug down several times a day to them.

Now I understand that most people are not able to do the water thing and that’s ok. Just make sure you have clean water daily.
Everything I did has helped a great amount. My chickens went from not laying any eggs to giving 35 eggs in two days.
To be honest, the process took a couple of weeks to start working.
I hope you give it a try and start collecting eggs.

The change in every season is beautiful. Cosmos are such a great flower to see that in.

Seed collecting is one my favorite things to do.
This is amaranth! I’m so impressed that it grew!

Now I’m collecting the seeds to start next spring.

Over the years, I’ve learned that buying new seeds every year is not smart. Not smart because it can get very expensive. And also, seeds collected from your crops will preform better than buying new seeds of the same thing every year.

The plants did well in the garden, which means that it had time to acclimate to its environment and produce a more resilient seed for the fallowing year.

I’m excited to collect all the seeds. And I’m sure it will make my husband very happy to know that I won’t have a large seed budget for the fallowing growing season 😂.
