Boxwood Manor...where history loves company!

Boxwood Manor is one of the older homes in the Upcountry of South Carolina. It was built on a Govenor’s Grant of 264 acres circa 1790. It has been in the Lewis-Moorhead family for six generations. The house was totally restored/renovated about 10 years ago. Bricks were hand-made for the old chimney like they would have make when the house was constructed. Even though it is a private home and farm, the family enjoys sharing the history with the community. The grounds can be rented as a venue for weddings, parties, family reunions and life celebrations.

There are vendor markets several times a year for local businesses to share and sell their wares. We have everything from home baked goodies to an assortment of hand-made items such as jewelry, hats & scarves, herbs, original artwork, boutique clothing and pottery. Most every event a non-profit is selected to educate the public about what they do and a percentage of the proceeds go to them. This past year, Fostering Faithfully and the Future Farmers of America participated in the markets. Sometimes there is a Cruise-In of classic cars and trucks. There is usually a food truck so you can eat a great meal or snack while you sit and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

Speaking of pottery, there is an anagama kiln at the farm called Firesong. It was built by Rob Gentry, a local claysmith, and several other artisans. It is a community wood-fired kiln and can hold 500+ pieces of pottery. It takes about two days to stoke the fire and temperatures get up to 2300 degrees Fahrenheit. It takes a community of potters to fill it as well as two days and nights of stoking the fire about every ten minutes. It is fired about four times a year.

The granary has a hand painted quilt that was part of a crazy quilt found in the house. Several other quilts found in the house have been painted and displayed at Boxwood Manor. These quilts are part of the Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail.
