So, here’s little brag/testimony to the fabulous draft horses that we have had the pleasure owning and caring for here at Carriages of Pensacola. They really are family…For those of you who are horse people, you’ll appreciate the trust these mighty steeds have when you view the video footage. Unfortunately, I was not able to capture the entire experience, but you get the gist. This is out 10th year delivering Santa to the Rosemary Beach town center Tree Lighting. We meet Santa on the north side of 30A with 4 escorts on foot (one of my experienced staff, and 3 security personnel from Rosemary). As we cross the street, the 3 Walton Co Sheriff’s deputies fall in around the Carriage for a total of 7 walkers. The crowd begins the Santa-Santa-Santa chant as we cross the street, hundreds and hundreds of them (I’m not an official crowd estimator, but I would say about 2000 people, tons of adults, kids, strollers and other revelers. A few years ago they added parade fencing to the path, which was a big help but sometimes you just can’t keep people from being dangerous. We passed through the crowd until the steps of the carriage lineup with Santa‘s red carpet to the stage. He descends from the carriage, gets his microphone turned on, greets the crowd, initiates the countdown to light the 50 foot tree, and then invites all the kids to breakfast with Santa the next morning. He works the crowd for what seems like an eternity as people want to pet the horse and get their picture taken with the carriage. Finally… he gets back in, and we start to make our way through the other half of the crowd and back across the main street. At this point, the pressure comes off and the euphoria of what a fabulous horse just made this trip is realized! This year Leonidas got the nod. In previous years our foundation Horse, Nell, brought in Santa and sometimes Jameson. Each of these mighty Draft horses handled the roar of the crowd (so loud that I could not give them voice comm
The best news we’ve had in a long time came yesterday from Auburn University…
Anna’s fecal test was Negative!
Our five month old filly spent 16 days at Auburn University large animal hospital being treated for salmonella. After she returned home she had to be in quarantine for another four weeks during which we adhered to strict bio security protocols. I don’t need to explain them, just know they were a pain in the butt! The graduation exam from quarantine is a test of her feces which are collected in five separate samples 12 hours apart and submitted to the bacteriology lab at Auburn…and yesterday we learned that all five samples were negative for salmonella. So now we will gradually re-introduce her to the rest of the herd and allow her some socialization and freedom that she has been missing. The poor little girl got driven three hours away from home with her mama and then weaned early due to her medical condition and has been in isolation for a total of seven weeks. Poor baby. It’s been hard on her emotionally, horses are social animals and she is so young. Better days ahead! 😀
