Congratulations Briella!

The Perry Rotary Club is identifying students in its component school districts that exemplify the motto: 'Service Above Self.'

The January Student of the Month for the Perry Central School District is Briella Ohlson. The following is Briella's nomination from Abby Ayers (Elementary School Counselor):

"Mentoring an elementary school student can be a truly rewarding journey that not only impacts the student’s life but also enriches the mentor's growth. Since volunteering to work with a small group of young students this semester, Bri has excelled in these skills. Her leadership, empathic listening, and unconditional positive regard have fostered positive relationships with, not just one, but three younger students. Bri checks in with them twice a week to focus on their interests and goals. She provides positive guidance and encouragement when a student is struggling with various needs. Bri often shares her personal experiences with her mentees to help them make informed decisions, or just to let them know they are not alone. She works tirelessly to address all of her mentee's concerns and collaborates with counseling staff for guidance when she feels it is warranted. Bri goes out of her way to provide necessary personal items to support her mentee's personal & learning goals. Bri has been creative in her approaches to her mentee's needs and actively advocates for support when needed.

A mentor should aim to provide guidance, support, and encouragement, helping students navigate challenges, set goals, and develop important skills. It's essential to build a trusting relationship where the mentees feel comfortable sharing their aspirations and struggles. This is a huge part of what Bri has accomplished in her work, already, in her short time working with our youngest learners. She took charge in establishing a response to a need she observed within our school and has been a leader amongst her peers. Bri is a wonderful example of the character that the Perry Community strives to contribute to our world. Bri has been a genuine pleasure to work with in the Elementary and I am excited to see how she positively influences the future!"

Congratulations Briella!

P.S. We hope to see your Rotary Scholarship application this spring.

Jamie Hudson and Kelly Nickerson from the Wyoming County Youth Bureau are working with 7th graders over the next eight weeks on the program LOVE146: Not a Number. The prevention curriculum is designed to teach youth how to protect themselves from human trafficking and exploitation through information, critical thinking, and skill development. With technology making the world a much smaller place, it’s vital to educate children to recognize risk factors and prevent possible dangerous situations.

"It might get a little smelly in here, but we're going to take off our shoes." Mrs. Adolf's comment was met with giggles from Mrs. Ferro's kindergarteners in the elementary art room this morning. Students are learning how to draw from observations and their first assignment was sketching their shoes, paying close attention to shapes and lines they observed.
