OPEN CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 1708
Pilot Artist Residency

1708 Gallery is pleased to announce a call for applications for its pilot Artist Residency Program. The pilot Artist Residency Program will be located on the second floor of 1708’s building at 319 W. Broad Street in Richmond’s downtown Arts District and will help 1708 further define the vision for its full artist residency program, which will expand the mission to empower and support diverse artists’ voices.

The pilot residencies will be free, and 1, 2 or 3 months in length running from September 2024 through August 2025.

1708 will provide a private live/work space, a $1000 monthly stipend, access to basic equipment and professional development opportunities.

While the application is open to all levels of experience, 1708 is especially interested in candidates with previous residency experience who can provide informed feedback to help shape the future of the program.

Additionally, the specific details and size of the space make the pilot residency especially well-suited for collectives and/or artists with families. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of artists.

Head to the link in bio to submit your application and learn more about 1708’s pilot Artist Residency!

There is something deeply beautiful about the human heart and it’s capacity to not only love animals; but to honor and care for them.

Think about this, how we fail to take care of one another, how governments fail to protect the human beings they vow to represent: and still we as citizens still find ways to love, and support and protect that which is sacred.

Thank you to the staff Maymont for the vocations you followed and the precious creatures you protect and love.

Gabby, Gabby, Gabby

“My first end-of-life patient was a 97-year-old man. He had a much younger girlfriend; she was seventy-four. But they loved each other so much. Back when their spouses were still alive, the four of them had been great friends. They would double date together. And when their spouses passed away—the two of them became a thing. Every day she would come over for lunch. I’d always cook a little meal for them. I’d prepare the table; I’d lay out my little candles and my little flowers. As soon as she arrived I’d put on music and dim the lights, then I’d leave the room and go wait in the bedroom. They would cuddle and snuggle. And the beauty of it was—even though he couldn’t control his fluids at that point, she never minded the smell. Her love for him was so great that they would still kiss and all that good stuff. When the doctors said that it was time for him to go to hospice, he said he didn’t want to go. He told them that he wanted to come back home and die with me. I was with him in the end. My patients never die alone. Never, ever. One week after his passing I was hired by his girlfriend’s family. She had terminal Alzheimer’s, and I ended up staying with her for seven years. I fell in love with her. We were family, just family. She used to be a tap dancer. We’d sing together. And if she didn’t feel like singing, I’d sing. Even near the end, she always knew when something was wrong with me. When I wasn’t being the Gabby that she knew-- she would always know. When the doctors said it was time for her to go to hospice, her children said: ‘We want her to die with Gabby.’ In the final days she wouldn’t eat, she’d lock her jaw. But she would always eat for me. One night I could see the fright in her eyes, and I knew it was time. My patients never die alone. Never, ever. So I climbed under the covers with her. And she passed away in my arms.”

Don’t forget to save some for
Yourself
I got so tired
And I wondered
Who was looking
Out for me
Those who did
Thank you
Those who think
I abandoned you;
At some point
You have to show
up for yourself
And when you do
And you are
Alone;
Remember all the
Love that
Those who love you
Left inside of you

Soft White Underbelly
Sid congratulations and thank you.

Love is a job people
Not just a feeling

He nailed it
LOVE is the
Most important
Contribution we can make to people who are in crisis and suffering with addiction.
I say suffer not struggle for a reason.
Because struggle implies that there is fight in the person.
I use the word suffer because it implies or at least for me personally it feels less adversarial: and more compassionate.

Addiction hurts.
It hurts everything that a person holds most dear.

The addict looking out and the
parent, partner, or family member looking in suffer.

The weight of fear is as bottomless
as the appetite it seeks to extinguish.

And don’t be confused; the addict is still a whole person;
Who loves, who thinks, who wants: but their disease is insanely efficient.
It is an uninvited guest that takes
residence in whatever physical or psychological (usually both) process it there to serve.

Addiction is the most successful
GASLIGHTING MOTHER FU**ER
I hope you never meet.

So try to give the person you care about
The love (not enabling)
And
The respect (they still deserve)

The love that was there all along:
Why would you deny it the opportunity
To do what it does best:
Support / Heal / Protect

Thank you
Soft White Underbelly

Your work is a sacred space
Where people can learn about
Addiction
And hopefully themselves…..

May we pay attention
To the Angels
Among us
Who will teach
Thru their love
What we seek
From above
Each of us has
something to give
That is pure and kind
It is compassion
Thru our actions
Where we meet
Something close to
Divine:
It is within in us
The present
Is all that we have
It is the gift
Of showing up
Where we find our humanity.
Thank you Austin for all you do for the animals.
Put community is blessed to have you be a beautiful
Light within and amongs all of ys.

A study found that giving direct food support to women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa cut their risk of contracting HIV by 64%, because it alleviated the pressure to engage in high-risk s*x.
