For five years, the BITE Records label has been one of the key players in Berlin's electronic music scene. The diversity of genres and the uniqueness of each release have rightfully become the hallmark of this music platform. However, the overall spirit, mood, and message have always remained characteristic of the label's sound, thanks to its constant leader. In honor of its fifth anniversary, the label's team announced their tour, and we have taken on the responsibility of curating their showcase in Philadelphia.

Introducing the label's sound, first and foremost, we want to mention Phase Fatale - its creator and ideologist. He is also a resident of the legendary clubs Berghain in Berlin and Khidi in Tbilisi. For many years, Hayden Payne has been developing his musical skills, creating mesmerizing basslines and captivating melodies. As he evolved and gained popularity, the artist began to gather like-minded individuals around him, with whom he started promoting a unique sound and his own musical ideas.

Speaking of collaborators, first and foremost, we should highlight our next guest - Pablo Bozzi- the person with whom the label's leader has joined forces in their creative endeavors. Together, they formed the group SOFT CRASH, which gained popularity both in Europe and beyond. However, Pablo himself is also an influential figure in the electronic music scene in Europe. His dedication to the sounds of Italo Disco sparked a new wave of interest in this genre and forever established him as a leader in this genre in the modern music scene.

Also performing with them will be a member of the label who has released multiple times on the label and is a unique representation of the label's friendship with the Georgian club Khidi - Vulkanski His distinct sound has been an exemplary representation of Georgian electronic music for many years.

Local support will be provided by the Boiled Angel, whose musical perspectives align with the label's participants. Her sound will be a great addition to our lineup, both aesthetically and technically.

Join us, experience the world of BITE at Fringe Bar

BRIAN ENO ON THE LOSS OF HUMANITY IN MODERN MUSIC

In music, as in film, we have reached a point where every element of every composition can be fully produced and automated by computers. This is a breakthrough that allows producers with little or no musical training the ability to rapidly turn out hits. It also allows talented musicians without access to expensive equipment to record their music with little more than their laptops. But the ease of digital recording technology has encouraged producers, musicians, and engineers at all levels to smooth out every rough edge and correct every mistake, even in recordings of real humans playing old-fashioned analogue instruments. After all, if you could make the drummer play in perfect time every measure, the singer hit every note on key, or the guitarist play every note perfectly, why wouldn’t you?

One answer comes in a succinct quotation from Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies, which Ted Mills referenced in a post here on Miles Davis: “Honor Your Mistakes as a Hidden Intention”. (The advice is similar to that Davis gave to Herbie Hancock, “There are no mistakes, just chances to improvise.”) In the short clip at the top, Eno elaborates in the context of digital production, saying “the temptation of the technology is to smooth everything out.”

But the net effect of correcting every perceived mistake is to “homogenize the whole song,” he says, “till every bar sounds the same… until there’s no evidence of human life at all in there.” There is a reason, after all, that even purely digital, “in the box” sequencers and drum machines have functions to “humanize” their beats—to make them correspond more to the looseness and occasional hesitancy of real human players.

This does not mean that there is no such thing as singing or playing well or badly—it means there is no such thing as perfection. Or rather, that perfection is not a worthy goal in music. The real hooks, the moments that we most connect with and return to again and again, are often happy accidents. Mills points to a whole Reddit thread devoted to mistakes left in recordings that became part of the song. And when it comes to playing perfectly in time or in tune, I think of what an atrocity would have resulted from running all of The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street through a digital audio workstation to sand down the sharp edges and “fix” the mistakes. All of its shambling, mumbling, drunken barroom charm would be completely lost. That goes also for the entire recorded output of The Band, or most of Dylan’s albums (such as my personal favorite, John Wesley Harding).

To take a somewhat more modern example, listen to “Sirena” from Australian instrumental trio Dirty Three, above. This is a band that sounds forever on the verge of collapse, and it’s absolutely beautiful to hear (or see, if you get the chance to experience them live). This recording, from their album Ocean Songs, was made in 1998, before most production went fully digital, and there are very few records that sound like it anymore. Even dance music has the potential to be much more raw and organic, instead of having singers’ voices run through so much pitch correction software that they sound like machines.

There is a lot more to say about the way the albums represented above were recorded, but the overall point is that just as too much CGI has often ruined the excitement of cinema (we’re looking at you, George Lucas) —or as the digital “loudness wars” sapped much recorded music of its dynamic peaks and valleys—overzealous use of software to correct imperfections can ruin the human appeal of music, and render it sterile and disposable like so many cheap, plastic mass-produced toys. As with all of our use of advanced technology, questions about what we can do should always be followed by questions about what we’re really gaining, or losing, in the process.

Black Friday Artist Spotlight: Amnesiac Host /

DC-based Amnesiac Host opens the night with a live techno set: he’s half of the Darkroom Bureau label and one of the organizers behind ‘100% Live Techno’, an event series he co-hosts with Philadelphia-based Monix and several others. He recently released ‘Two-Sided Ideal’, a 3-track EP which prioritizes deep kicks and discordant atmospheres. Expect the live set to follow in similar form; he adds, "Everything takes shape in a continuous mix with a modular synth, MPC, and a xone92. I say 'mix' because I move between sequences on the xone similar to how I would move between tracks when DJing. I minimize hard transitions, spending more time on the EQs, faders, and filters instead. The overall atmosphere I try to make is one with lush chord pads and subtly-moving FM leads."

Black Friday Artist Spotlight: Silent Servant /

Silent Servant (Official) is the primary pseudonym of California electronic artist Juan Mendez, who produces techno with a heavy post-punk/industrial influence. He first began releasing material as Silent Servant during the mid-2000s, when he was a key member of the influential techno collective Sandwell District. Following numerous well-received underground singles, he made a major impact on the techno world with Negative Fascination, his acclaimed 2012 full-length debut.

Following Mendez's co-founding of the Jealous God label in 2013, as well as several singles and collaborations with the likes of Marcel Dettmann and Phase Fatale, Silent Servant released his second album, the more overtly EBM-influenced Shadows of Death and Desire, in 2018. 2022 sees Mendez continuing to Play the US and Europe, new releases on L.I.E.S., and maintaining his fifth year of the Optimistic Decay radio NTS.

Black Friday Artist Spotlight: Soft Crash /

Soft Crash is the collaborative project of BITE Records founder Phase Fatale and one of the label’s protagonists Pablo Bozzi. United by a mutual passion for a particular melancholic yet sensual approach, and a sound that combines influences of synthwave, EBM, Italo and techno, the two have proved themselves to be a perfect match

Recently, Soft Crash released their first LP ‘Your Last Everything’. The album further expands the Italo Body Music palette into electro, acid house, bleep, hi-nrg, and IDM. Each of the eight tracks on the LP sounds layered and intricate, with a variety of interactions between different technical elements and intertwining melodies that reference high production methods from the 80s and 90s turned contemporary.
