This is Frank Gelb. We live across the street from each other in Ventnor, New Jersey. Frank was a major player in boxing from the late 1960s through 2000. He broke into the business with Norristown, PA, welterweight Leroy Roberts and, in the 1970s, he managed Jimmy Young, Tyrone Everett, Ronnie McGarvey, Mike Everett, Matthew Saad Muhammad and others. When casino gambling passed in 1976 in Atlantic City, Frank became the first (and only, for a brief period) licensed promoter there. He was the go-to guy for boxing on the Boardwalk for many years. Frank then moved on to a more satisfying (and more lucrative) vocation, helping to direct the careers of tenors Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli.
The first time we spoke by phone in 1969, he was in the furniture business. He said to me: "You mean you do this for a living?" We both get a kick out of that line, even today, and that's how I inscribed one of the five books (Thirty Dollars and a Cut Eye) he purchased for himself and his family.
Like any marriage, we had our ups and our downs, but it's all good. When a writer asked him years ago about me, he replied that I had a nice wife. Today is Frank's xxth birthday. Happy Birthday, Frank. We had fun.
By the way, Frank has a nice wife, also.
