Open to the public. One of the oldest and largest of the German-American clubs in Philadelphia, the Cannstatter Volksfest-Verein was founded in 1873 for the purpose of celebrating the customs and traditions of their homeland, especially the annual harvest festival held in the town of Bad Cannstatt. The annual Fest held on Labor Day weekend draws thousands of people, both German-Americans and others, to observe and participate in this colorful, ethnic event.
Break out those Lederhosen and Dirndls! We are less than a month away from the 152nd Volksfest at the Cannstatter and we have German Night at the Biergarten to get those Volksfest juices flowing!

We would like to congratulate Ted Hierl's German American Radio Show for celebrating 50 years.
Ted and his son Ralph who continues the show every Sunday at 10 AM, have been long-time supporters of the Cannstatter and we are impressed by their dedication to reach such a milestone!
50 Years ago my father started the German American Radio program with Rudy Stumpf on WTTM - 920, on Sunday mornings in Trenton. They went their separate ways after a few years, but my father was for many years on WTTM, and also on WJDM in Elizabeth which gave him a reach from Delaware up to New York and Long Island. It helped reach a broad audience of German-Americans and bring a piece of German culture home with traditional and current music.
After WTTM switched formats, we moved to WNWR in Philadelphia, and then to the current home on WWDB AM 860
I continued hosting the show with my mother's help in 2010 when my father passed away and am happy to celebrate the 50th anniversary today.

German Night at the Cannstatter Biergarten was not canceled last week, just postponed to this week!
Don Bitterlich will be playing inside tonight as we avoid the storms and rain, but the Biergarten will continue on!
We will also have Frank Sinatra cover Steve Ritrovato Dinner and Show going on tonight as well. If you have not gotten tickets yet, you can purchase them at the door.

The Altweibermuehle is a fixture of our Labor Day Volksfest every year with performances on Sunday and Monday.

Our annual Labor Day Volksfest is rapidly approaching!
To host the three-day event we depend heavily on volunteers from our membership, but also from all those that might be interested in lending a hand. If anyone is interested in getting more involved with the club, this is a great opportunity to learn more about our membership and volunteer Directors.
We have many jobs that need to be accomplished in the week(s) leading up to and during the event.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Hargis Knoechel.
Hargis was a long-time Director, who stepped down two years ago but continued to actively serve the board as an Ehrendirektor, even while going through cancer treatment. While Hargis maintained a strong presence in our club, he was equally involved and loved in the German American community. Over the years he was a vital contributor to many clubs: the Hermann-Humboldt Lodge, the VE and Phoenix. He loved skiing, Fussball, good food and drink, German music and was a Heimatklaenge "fan-boy". During our Volksfest, Hargis was a fixture for years in our H-Bar and gave spirited performances on the Altweibermuehle where he was the star of the show. He volunteered at the Thursday Night Alte Herren Bingo up until only a few weeks ago.
Hargis was the kind of fellow who always brought joy to everyone he encountered and one seldom left a conversation without a chuckle or smile. He'd greet the ladies with a warm embrace and the men with a playful ruffle on the head. Hargis was in the middle of the action wherever he went. He knew a joke and a story for every occasion and was always there whenever the singing started. As jovial and loose as Hargis was socially, he was a disciplined man and would not hesitate to tell you privately in candor if he thought you were full of "it".
He touched the hearts of many over the course of his life and I am sure we all have countless memories and stories of Hargis. He will be sorely missed.
Details for final arrangements have not yet been made, but they will be updated on his obituary once they become available.
Please keep his wife Bunny and children Steve and Andrea with family in your thoughts and prayers.
