A New Years Message from Artistic Director Dominick DiOrio:
"I am grateful for so many things this year, including the return to singing music that we love, music that moves us, and music that is hot off the presses! It was so wonderful to see so many of you at our beloved A Feast of Carols concerts in Chestnut Hill. We had the chance to perform the world premiere of my Three Postcard Carols. (And shhh... a little sneak peak secret! We will sing four more brand-new carols next year thanks to the generosity of donors like you who give to support the Mendelssohn Chorus.)
We gathered at the Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square for This Love Between Us, featuring the glorious "Magnificat" of Johann Sebastian Bach and Indian American composer Reena Esmail's magical work for sitar and tabla. Performing again with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia was sublime! (Another wonder that would not have been possible without gifts to support our projects and aspirations); and we have more planned for the new year.
From a historic collaboration in March with Commonwealth Youthchoirs and conductor-composers Rollo Dilworth and Alysia Lee, to our May performance of Maurice Durufle's stunning Requiem for chorus and organ. It is thrilling to be singing the music we love, and to be performing with artists of world-class calibre from right here in our own backyard."
We are BACK at Christmas Village in Love Park today, Saturday December 17th, at 4PM! Grab the family and come see us!
At last weekend’s A Feast of Carols, Mendelssohn Chorus premiered Dominick DiOirio’s “Three Postcard Carols”. Written in the winter of 2020 when we were still in isolated bubbles and waiting for vaccines, these carols were offered as part of a virtual fundraiser. This year, we have extended this unique opportunity to you - for a donation of $2,500 you will commission award-winning composer and MCP Artistic Director Dominick DiOrio to compose a personal carol in honor or in memory of a loved one in your life. Deadline to order your own postcard is tomorrow, Friday, December 16th!
In the meantime, any donor who gave $100 or more since December 1 was entered into a drawing to win their own Postcard Carol. We are thrilled to announce that the winner of the Postcard Carol drawing is Roseanna McCleary! We are so proud that our community’s love of music raised $2,500 towards this campaign. Donations will go directly to supporting the singers and songs of Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia. Thank you!
