I truly fell in love with the culture and people of Mexico during my trip to Jalisco in 2019. The trip concluded during Day of the Dead, which is a celebration filled with images of sugar skulls and marigolds that I had only heard about or seen in pop culture. Being there to experience Day of the Dead, I saw that families celebrate the life of the people that they have lost through colorful altars, joyful remembrance, story telling of fond memories and special food and beverages. Through my cocktail submission for #ochotakemetomexico, the Flor De Muerto, or Flower of the Dead, a nickname for marigolds, I want to honor and incorporate memories and recipes from my mom who passed away. She would have appreciated the festival fall flavors in the cocktail, it’s bright red glow and the name since we always had marigolds growing around the yard growing up.
Cocktail: Flor de Muerto
Ingredients:
2 oz Tequila Ocho Plata Silver (infused 48 hours with baked apples, star anise, cinnamon sticks, orange peels and honey)
1 oz Campari
.25 oz honey simple syrup
2 oz homemade cranberry juice (boil cranberries in enough water to have them float until they start to burst, mash with potato masher, add sugar to taste and strain with a cheesecloth)
2 dashes of Orange Bitters
Stir with ice and then strain over a large ice cube with star anise frozen inside. Garnish with two orange peel roses, one for my mom and one for my grandfather.
