What's Happening in the Store this Month

Last week we made a special announcement. A project that has been in the works for weeks has finally come to fruition. Our sun room has been converted into a plant room. It currently houses over 20 varieties of houseplants, the cutest planters, as well as home gardening supplies.

We intended to create a space that felt welcoming and comfortable, a place to come and sit with the plants and leaf through our book selection, get some work done, or just sit and watch the world go by.

On a personal note...

With wedding season upon us, our team filled with excitement and anticipation. There is something truly special about creating floral designs for such intimate and meaningful celebrations.

It was an incredible honor and surprise to see our floral work featured in such an important publication like Montana Bride magazine.

I set our goals high and stayed focused on what our style and floral composition goals would be. This particular set of installations was an example of the hard work and consistency of practice. Our team was deeply honored by this recognition, and it has put us on the map for exciting and creative projects ahead.

What inspires me most about floral designs, especially for smaller, more intimate weddings and gatherings, is the opportunity for creativity and attention to detail. These settings allow us to incorporate unique color palettes, exotic flowers, and thoughtful design elements, making every aspect of the event special and elevated.

The inspiration for our designs comes from the wedding location, the beauty of Montana, season, and the couple themselves. These factors and color palette, decor elements, and even the food, drink, and attire guide us in our floral creations to ensure a cohesive and beautiful event.

To all the couples planning their weddings this season, my message is simple:

Your wedding day should reflect your unique love story. We are here to help you bring that vision to life with highly personalized and expertly crafted floral designs.

Whether it's an intimate dinner party or a small wedding, our team is dedicated to making every moment magical and memorable.

It wouldn't be Spring in Montana with a bit of snow in April, would it? Despite the chilly weather, we're ushering in Spring with some exciting happenings here at Saj this month.

We have Teacher Appreciation Week, Mother's Day, and lots of graduations to look forward to.

Good Flower Farm

Good Flower Farm is a small, woman-owned, organically-operated body care brand located in Bayfield, Wisconsin. All their products are made in their production space & retail location along the shores of Lake Superior. They mindfully craft high-quality skincare products from herbs grown by the same hands that make their products.

At the intersection of luxury and sustainability, they harness the power of plants to create skincare that works without compromise. From herbal salves to nourishing facial care to organic deodorant, they make every product with love and care using the most sustainable practices possible, with the most vibrant ingredients.

1% of their revenue is donated to environmental organizations and they are certified cruelty-free.

On a personal note...

Saj opened its doors in May of 2021, so when May rolls around, it's always a time for us to reflect on the last year. We are now entering our 4th summer at 138 W Broadway.

Patience was the word of 2023-- learning to trust the process has been a massive lesson over the years but with things falling more into rhythm in the last year, it has become obvious that's what was meant to be learned.

When you first start in business, you just don't know what to expect. It takes time to learn the patterns of what each season brings. It takes time for your people to find you. It takes time to get to where you want to be. It takes time to develop the skills.

So yes, patience.

I'm so grateful to be here now, with a wonderful team. With each year we are welcoming new and familiar faces back into the shop. We're looking forward to introducing you to even more small and sustainable brands this year, and for all the fun events we'll be hosting on our patio very soon!

A Recipe for Cinco de Mayo

For the Chicken:

- 1 boneless, skinless chicken breast, pounded to even thickness
- 2 tbsp lime juice
- 1/2 large clove of garlic, finely chopped
- 1 large pinch ground cumin
- 1 large pinch red pepper flakes
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste

For the Salsa:
- 1 small tomato (about 2" in diameter) hard stem part removed
- 1 tsp olive oil plus 1 tbsp
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 dried guajillo or New Mexico chili (substitute canned chipotle and skip rehydrating step)
- 1/2 large clove of garlic
- 1 small pinch oregano
- 1 slice onion, diced
- Salt and pepper to taste

For the tortillas:
- 3 corn tortillas
- Olive oil
- Salt to taste

Garnishes:
- Crumbled Queso Fresco or grated Queso Anejo
- 1 tbsp crema or sour cream (optional)
- 2 springs of cilantro (optional)

To Make

- Marinate the chicken breast by mixing it with the lime juice, garlic, cumin and red pepper flakes in a small bowl or dish.

- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees farenheit. Cut the tomato in half and coat with the teaspoon of olive oil, then season with salt and pepper. Bake in the oven on a small tray, cut side down, until softened (about 10 minutes), then remove the skin (they should just slip off). In the meantime, remove the stem and seeds from the guajillo chili and cover with warm water to soften.

- Brush the tortillas with the olive oil lightly on both sides and season with salt. In the oven, toast the tortillas directly on the rack until lightly browned and crunchy, about 7 minutes.

- Puree the softened guajillo and baked tomato together with the garlic and pinch of oregano, using a blender and some of the guajillo soaking water.

- In a small saute pan, heat the tablespoon of olive oil and saute the onion on medium heat until translucent. Add the tomato mixture and cook until a little thickened, then season with salt and pepper to taste.

- Heat a grill or grill pan on high. Remove the chicken from the marinade and coat with a little olive oil, then season with salt and pepper. Place on the grill and cook for 2 minutes or until nice brown grill marks are formed, then turn 45 degrees and cook another 2 minutes. Flip and finish cooking on the other side, about another 3 minutes or until interior is cooked to 165 degrees.

- Break the tortillas into triangles, add to the tomato sauce, and toss while simmering until some of the sauce is absorbed. Place on a plate next to the finished chicken and top with queso, crema, and cilantro.
