7/4/2006 ~ I was up dumb early this morning when I found out about passing… Decided to dig in my vault to share a few of my shots from the day I met him in Detroit… By this time I had been shooting around the Hip Hop scene in the city a few years… On this day (I think it was Taste Fest) the incredible line up had Waajeed spinning and J*Davey was in town to perform… But the closer was Amp (I remember my homies Jennifer & Ebony were singing background)… At this point I was just beginning to get comfortable with doing photography stuff on and around stages while people were performing… But I was nervous AF being around Amp… Quite a bit star struck honestly… Dude was a legend… Played with Parliament… Mentored the G.O.A.T. Dilla… Detroit Royalty… So I was being super timid trying not to be in the way and annoy/distract him while shooting… Most of these were takin with my zoom lenses… But at one point on stage behind them while shooting during this set, Amp saw me and waved his hand at me to say it was cool to come up a little more… Like he smelled the fear or something lol… That small bit of gentle kindness and acknowledgment was representative of how our encounters would continue to play out… Our paths crossed maybe three more times while was in Detroit… And on each occasion it got easier for me and I was more comfortable… Each time this giant pillar of the Motor City music community always welcomed me into the space with encouragement… Mourning this huge loss with the rest of my Detroit music family today… Rest In Power Uncle Amp… 🙏🏾

~ Black Classical Music (2023)… I watched a magician play drums last night… This album has been at near the top of my list of albums that came out this year since I first streamed it… The LP has literally not left my bag since I got it in September… I play songs from it at all my gigs… I love it… But seeing it performed live at last night was a incredibly enlightening experience… My favorite drummers I have seen live are Louis Hayes, Carter Beauford, Daru Jones, and Questlove… Yussef was on another level last night for me though… I left feeling like what I imagined seeing Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Clyde Stubblefield, Bernard Purdie, Tony Allen, or Neil Peart in their prime must have been like… It was a spiritual performance with a normally reserved Phoenix crowd pumped full of electricity… S/O to the Phoenix music community who were DEEP in the building last night (it felt like a family reunion)… I woke up this morning and immediately went to put the album on… And then I remembered that he was nice enough to chat with and sign things for folk… Including two other excellent records that he plays on… I can’t recommend this album or his live show enough…

~ Midnight Marauders (1993)… There is not another album in my collection that has been more influential or means as much to me musically than this one… I was 18 exploring early adulthood when it came out… My first days connecting with other music folk from around the country… My first days in clubs… Good memories with this album… It was my favorite Hip-Hop album for a very long time… It’s the album really got me into noticing samples & loops… It’s the album that began my interest in Jazz… I still have my old beat copy that I got more than 25 years ago… It spent years in my Mom’s basement neglected when I was a CD guy and didn’t even have a record player… But I never got rid of it cause of how much it meant to me… It’s got so many bumps and ticks in it that I never take it out to play in public… At some point I’ll get one of the dbl LP versions but I love my OG to death… I only play it every couple of years… Today I’m doing so as for its 30th anniversary…

~ Enter The Wu-Tang [36 Chambers](1993)… Everyone is gonna have words about this classic today… So instead of waxing poetic about the album here is a funny story I will never forget about this one… So when this comes out I’m in the service in North Carolina… I was listening to this daily at my USMC MOS school at Camp Johnson… I recognized this greatness early and could not wait to get home to Detroit for leave Thanksgiving weekend to tell my friends on the block about it… These were my guys from the hood who were music heads (I’m not naming names, but y’all know who you are)… I played them joints from this telling them how incredible they were, and they were pretty much like “Meh”… I wasn’t tripping though cause different strokes and all that… Fast forward to Memorial Day 94 which was the next time I was home on leave… Do you know these cats where bagging this album and trying to tell me about it?… I told them it was crazy how they were hating on it last time I was home which they denied… I of course commented on their convenient amnesia… Crazy to think that was 30 years ago… This is the version and comes with some extra goodies… Playing it loudly right now…

~ Black To The Future (2021)… I came late to the Sons of Kemet party… But once I discovered them in the Summer of 2018 I was all in… This is the final album from the group on and is a wonderful listen… The album is frenetic and sounds like a exploding revolution in the best way… Listening to it gets me stirring physically, emotionally, and mentally… I played it yesterday afternoon to close out my workday, but decided to run it back this morning…

Bobby Hutcherson ~ Oblique (Recorded 1967)… An amazing date originally released in 1973… The rhythm section of Chambers, Stinson (whose playing here makes you wonder what could have been had he not passed at such a young age) & Hancock keeper the pace wonderfully throughout the session… Hutcherson is in fine form as a leader here as well… This was an album I had not heard prior to the Tone Poet Series of reissues… It feels like Fall/Winter… Gonna bring it out in a couple weeks to some gigs… Perfect background for an introspective Wednesday morning…

Vibes ~ Bobby Hutcherson

Jhene Aiko ~ Sail Out (2013)… Living in Greenville at times I felt like I was all the way on the other side of the world when the LA scene of the 2010’s started to hit… Thank goodness for the internet… As the blog era was coming to an end I discovered Jhene via vocals on a few mixtapes I dug… She is one of the few R&B artists from that era I really dig… This EP is still wonderful… Solid features from folk that went on to become some of my favorite artists… I should have had this on vinyl a long time ago… However I am not a fan of the picture disc (I own none on purpose, but that’s another post)… So I waited and waited until earlier this year this was reissued… I still love it… It’s like a time capsule for a period of music I vastly under appreciated… Currently going down memory lane and thinking about all the sneakers I had before I had kids…

Bohannon ~ Stop & Go (1973)… Morning work vibes via Bohannon… This is his first solo album after a period of working as a arranger and session musician for Motown in the 60s… Wah Wah Watson & Ray Parker Jr. are absolute monsters on this whole album… The often sampled “Save Their Souls” is an all time banger that got me here… But “Singing A Song For My Mother” is giving me all the juke joint/church service feels I need to kick off my week… Happy Monday…

11/02/2023

Foster Sylvers ~ Foster Sylvers (1973)… “Misdemeanor” is an all time favorite jam and it’s how I got here… Foster’s version is in my top two along with Ahmad Jamal’s take… The rest of the album is filled with funky young MJ-like tunes produced by Michael Viner of The Incredible Bongo Band… The percussion arrangements from Harvey Mason and King Errison are killer throughout… While the aforementioned “Misdemeanor” is definitely the star of this album, the three closing tunes keep me coming back to this record… “Move Love” is a mid tempo banger that will get your head nodding… I play it regularly in soul sets… “Only My Love Is True” and “Lullaby/Uncle Albert” both a pretty slept on slow joints that round out the project nicely…

~ Lahai (2023)… There has been sooo much good stuff that’s dropped this year… This album is one of my absolute favorites… Sampha’s projects alway feel like a spiritual experience to me… Lahai is no different… Every track is a vibe… The whole run is a rewarding journey… My photos definitely don’t do the packaging on this Deluxe Edition justice… The bonus songs on the 12” cap the album off nicely… I don’t have much more to say about it, except that if you’re not hip you should definitely tune in… There is definitely some type of musical renaissance occurring in the UK over the last few years… Between all the Jazz cats I’m loving, Sault, Simz, Cleo, & Sampha, I’m about ready to pack up & move…

Prince ~ Batman [Motion Picture Soundtrack](1989)… This is one of those albums that I always thought was perfect for Halloween… I picked this reissue up from this summer and felt like I needed to spin it today… I remember getting the tape back in the day from Columbia house… But back then I was primarily focused on my favorite songs from the film… “Trust”, “Lemon Crush”, & “Partyman” have always been Prince favs of mine (One of these is guaranteed to be in any Prince set I play 🤷🏾‍♂️) … And the single “Batdance” is classic, especially the due to the visuals which captivated me as a kid… TBH, I don’t think younger 8th grade me had a healthy respect for the rest of the soundtrack (Def too young for “Scandalous”… But when I got older though 👀😈😂)… As a more mature listener with a broader palette I have come to realize how incredible this whole album actually is… Over time it’s become one of my secret fav album’s in Prince’s massive catalog of music… 🦇🕺🏾🎃

~ Remember Your North Star (2022)… Online shopping is cool, but there is absolutely nothing like the experience of getting a good recommendation from a music head in a store… I only bought one record for myself when I was in NYC last week… Slid into after lunch (very dope store ~ highly recommended) and begin to browse… After about 5 mins I started paying attention to the artist that was playing… A few tracks in I knew I was taking the album with me… This album by Brooklyn native Yaya Bay has had me in a chokehold since… My vinyl arrived on Friday (always ship or carry on, never pack) and I’ve played it everyday since… Yaya feels like a 2023 version of Billie Holiday… The stories in her songs reflect soul, hiphop, & jazz… It’s a very fun ride with my favorite tune being “Keisha” which made me ask who the artist was… The owner in the shop tells me he knew I would dig it based on some of the other stuff he saw me pick up (this is peak record store customer experience right here!)… “Meet Me In Brooklyn” & “Pour Up” are about to be staples in my sets… And I’ll likely play a bunch of this album at Slow Gems next month… Of course when I get home to Phoenix I’m excited to share this discovery with who basically tells me I’m HELLA late and how this album was on her Best of 2022 list… This whole experience taught me a few valuable lessons… 1st: I need to get in stores and talk with music folk instead of digging in my own rabbit holes so much… 2nd: I need to pay more attention to my music friends… 3rd: I gotta get back to shutting down in January and dive into folks lists… 4th: Next year we gotta find more time for to do more stuff together so hear stuff like this regularly… Still better late than never… So now I’m sharing with y’all… Go check this one out… Looking forward to more from Yaya Bey, and I’m def visiting Legacy again next time I’m in BK… 🙏🏾

& feat. ~ Paradise (2018)… The good folk over at consistently kill it… When this was released it immediately became a staple in my vinyl & digital sets… Been angry with myself for not getting doubles for years… So when a warehouse find was announced a few weeks ago there was no way I was gonna get caught slipping again… Came home from NYC to find two more of these in my mailbox!… Absolute stunner of a release with epic artwork by (you may have also seen me around the Valley in the T-Shirt 😜) and on the layout & design… Can’t wait to play a pair together this weekend…

Mighty Ryeders ~ Help Is Spread The Message (1978)… Sometimes you get lead to an album… Maybe about a month ago, a record I have had on my Discogs want list popped up at a price point I wanted… So I added it to my cart as normal, but felt inclined to look through the seller’s remaining inventory… I usually do this if the person seems to have a bit of stuff that aligns with my tastes or if I’m just trying to justify the cost of shipping… I stumbled across this album while scrolling and came to the realization that while “Evil Vibrations” has been a bit of a standard in my crate for 20 years (via a dope comp I got in like 2001) and “In The Groove” since the blog era, I had never heard the entire MR album… I slid out on the trusty inter webs and listened to the album and it’s just a dope as I always imagined it would be… Super funky, jazzy, & soulful… So good it’s better than the original album I was planning on buying from the seller (I still got both though hahahah)… Crazy to think this was the groups only project… This reissue from the Luv N’ Haight crew in 2019 sounds wonderful… It’s been in constant rotation since I copped… One of my best purchases of 2023… Highly recommended…

Kanye West ~ 808s & Heartbreak (2008)… This is still my favorite Kanye album… The same way pumpkin spice rolls around in the Fall, this time of year draws me back to it… I used to think this was darkest timeline Yeezy, but we’ve learned otherwise over the years… Still this album is a perfect listen that reminds me of my last few winters in Detroit… The packaging here as with most Kanye albums is a bit much for me… But it’s nice for those who dig all the Kaws stuff… I’m here for the music though… The opener, singles, guest appearances are all highs… “Heartless” through “Paranoid” are all times jams… And yes its influence is still felt 15 years later… But I want to take a min to highlight my favorite stretch of an excellently sequenced project… “Robocop”, “Street Lights”, & “Bad News” (Side A of Record 2) begin the 2nd part of the album… These three tracks feel like when you are on a rollercoaster and get past the first big drop, thinking you are safe, only to be thrown all around on another drop and spiral out of control… They are such an intricate part of why I enjoy the ride of this project so much… Kicking the morning off with this one and a cup of chai, pretending it’s really Fall although we are pushing 100 again here in the desert…

~ Supreme Clientele (2000)… Happy Wu-Wednesday… Tony Starks is legendary… He has the best career of all the members of Wu… Epic catalog, classic guest appearances, and always kept it a buck… When the inevitable discussion of the best Wu solo project begins it always seems to come down to a consensus three candidates… While Cuban Linx and Liquid Swords are masterpieces in their own right (I would not argue against either of them for the top spot ~ It’s about preference I suppose) for me it gets no better than Ghost’s magnum opus… It’s perfect… Felt like I needed to spit some bars along with one of my all time favorite MCs this morning…

10/10/2023

~ Walking Wounded (1996)… This was my first EBTG album… I knew the Todd Terry remix of “Missing” cause it was everywhere of course… But this was were I tuned in… I absolutely love ove this album… It was one of my earliest forays into the styles of music that were coming from the UK in the 90’s… It’s such a great listen from beginning to end… crafted the perfect backdrop of drum & bass, downtempo, and trip-hop for soulful vocals to float over… This album is foundational for me to get into artists like Esthero, Portishead, Bjork, Roni Size, Stereolab, Massive Attack, 4Hero, Goldie, Tricky, and a ton of other stuff not directly linked… I have distinct memories of listening to this album with friends in my 20’s… Reliving those experiences while working today… Probably gonna place some of it tonight at Slow 💎Gems…

~ New Amerykah Pt.1 [4th World War](2007)… Late nights and early mornings call for Badu… Even though Mama’s Gun is my all time favorite album by her, as time passes the New Amerykah phase has become my favorite period from the Queen Muva… I loved this one from the point it dropped, and it has continued stayed in rotation over the years… I remember getting my CD from and vibing out to it on lunch breaks… “The Healer”, “Master Teacher”, The Roy Ayers Music Project (RAMP) cover “Amerykahn Promise”, the hidden bonus track/single “Honey”… All classics… For me it’s the Sa-Ra Created Partners assisted “The Cell” that’s a driving force for why I love this project… It’s a funky banger that makes you dance and vibe out (S/N: It’s also a great song for the treadmill 🏃🏾‍♂️)… The album closes with one of my all time favorite songs by Erykah “Telephone”… It’s one of those tracks that I find myself listening to on repeat while driving at night (did this last night actually which is how I got here 😊)… About to run this album back to back a few times while I try to get my mind together for another long week…

General Smilie & Papa Michigan ~ Rub-A-Dub Style (1979)… For those of you that have been following along, I have been playing a weekly Reggae & Dub gig for a few months now… This has allowed me to do some exploration and find a ton of stuff I dig… So I’ve been in a bit of a hole diving into the back catalogues of labels like Trojan, Island and others the way that we music nerds tend to do… This release on Studio One is one of my favorite discoveries… It compiles a number of 45s that were released by them which will save room in my crates… I had to get a copy on LP so I ordered from Jamaica… Six bangers here… Dope grooves where the producers sample older reggae joints and let the duo jump on them… I’m becoming fascinated with early dancehall and see a bunch more of these type of purchases in my future… Highly recommended…

Al Green ~ I’m Still In Love With You (1972)… This is my absolute favorite Al Green album from start to finish… It’s his Low End Theory or Off The Wall… Half of the album are either hits or songs that are considered Green standards at this point… And that doesn’t include my all time favorite song by him “Simply Beautiful”… Willie Mitchell and the phenomenal Hi Records rhythm section absolutely work out throughout the album… I got up this morning not sure what to play and then saw a post from on my feed that inspired this selection… Check them out for a dope podcast and always interesting content related to modern soul classics… Meanwhile I’m over here vibing out to this masterpiece…

S/N: It’s criminal that no songs from this album are listed in the IG share music options… I have no clue how they chose WTH is in that thing… SMH

Ryo Fukui ~ Scenery (1976)… It’s pretty rare that I kick myself for sleeping on something… But this is one of those times… I have passed this record up a number of times for whatever reason… Didn’t even stream it before finally breaking down and ordering it at the beginning of the Summer… Shame on me… I was talking recently to a friend about jazz records with perfect sides… This one has two… The trio’s takes on a number of classics are wonderful… And the original composition fits in just right… It’s a beautiful listen from start to finish and I can’t wait to share it at tomorrow evening…

~ A Lil’ Light (2003)… After playing an all set last week I been revisiting some of my first pick ups related to him… About the same period that classics like Madvillian & Jaylib were released A Lil’ Light dropped… I got this when it was originally released and it’s still one of my favorite albums… Pretty sure this was my first exposure to Declaime too, as I had to backtrack to Lootpack stuff… The vocals are soulful & funky in a comedic manner that puts you in the mind of some of the best work from Parliament or Lord Quas… I’ve found ways to play tracks from this album out at all types of gigs, and they hit every time… Having the instrumental version on vinyl is a bonus as Madlib was in the pocket on pretty much all of the beats here… Highly recommended along with their 2nd team up “Expressions (2012 A.U.)” from 2006…

starting a label was an absolute no brainer to any who has knew him… He’s always had the ear and been extremely forward thinking… Using it to mentor & shine light on new talent is also consistent with who he has always inherently been… 10 years (and 84 releases!) later, I’m proud to say he’s still at it…

To celebrate, here are a bunch of my Non-The Gift favorites from the label… Cause you may be able to still get these if you’re lucky… hahaha

Big congratulations to Shoes and everyone over at on this major anniversary milestone… We see (love to hear) all your hard work Bro… You are appreciated…

Ya’ll better go check out SCM Bandcamp and get some goodies at a discount while you can before Shoes’ heart shrinks three sizes and he turns back into the grinch…
