Our long time friend Dave Slack of Leggett has passed after a battle with an aggressive cancer. If you remember Dave and like to help donate to cover his funeral costs there is a donation jar at the patriot gas station cooks valley. Anything helps lay our friend to rest. He was a big teddy bear and had a heart of gold and always had a witty joke to be had. You will be missed dear friend but not forgotten!

August 9th Senator McGuire revealed that a total of 15 rural fire districts and departments operating in the challenging landscapes of Northern Mendocino and Southern Humboldt will be recipients of vital funding. The centerpiece of this endeavor will be the acquisition of 10 new type six fire engines, a critical resource that is urgently needed in these remote and under-served areas. The fire departments slated for the acquisition of these new engines include Briceland, Whitethorn, Garberville, Palo Verde, Telegraph Ridge, Covelo, Laytonville, Leggett, Piercy, and Westport.
State Senator Mike McGuire secured $2 million in funding for this crucial firefighting equipment across Northern Mendocino and Southern Humboldt following a year of planning and collaboration to fortify regional wildfire response strategies.
The $2 million will extend beyond equipment procurement, encompassing comprehensive firefighting training and grant writing support for each of the 15 aforementioned fire departments as well as Bell Springs, Whale Gulch, Alderpoint, Redway, and Shelter Cove who will also benefit from these resources.
In tandem with this initiative, an additional $6 million in CalFire Fire Prevention grants have been earmarked for Mendocino, Humboldt, and Sonoma Counties. These grants will be disbursed to fire departments, special districts, and nonprofit organizations whose wildfire prevention projects align with the overarching goals of enhancing community resilience.
The breakdown of the CalFire Fire Prevention grants is as follows:
Humboldt County: $982,287
Mendocino County: $4 million dollars
Sonoma County: $900,000
