There are only a few wives that just can’t wait to have the family photo shoot conversation with their husbands and even fewer that can’t wait to spend hours getting the whole family ‘picture perfect’ just to have their toddler refuse to get out the car when you finally get there. The truth is . . . . Nothing beats the feeling of seeing those precious photos the first time and few things beat the
feeling of seeing them the second time. And it doesn’t really matter if these photos are taken by the best photographer in the area, by the neighbor or in my case, by my 5 year old son who can run the timer on my camera better than any pro. Here is the most important part about family photos:
THEY EXIST. I repeat . . . THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ABOUT FAMILY PHOTOS IN THAT THEY EXIST. You are responsible to be your own historian. To protect the memories of your family and your family yet to come. No one has ever looked back on photos of their great grandmother and said “She really could have lost 10 lbs.”
In fact, if you are waiting to lose a few pounds to take photos, well, shame on you. Get in the photos! Make crazy faces with your kids, your grand kids, your husband. Let them know that you were there, you loved them, and they were special to you. Protect your history. Professional photos can be a fun way to capture your family. If you have an out-of-the-studio kinda style, there are a lot more “lifestyle” photographers than there used to be. Check them out and find someone that fits your family’s character and heck, maybe that’s even me. Here are a few tips for the big day:
1. Dress in a casual, fun way that represents who your family is. A toddler in a suit and tie, will cry. Promise.
2. The little ones are always right. Well, for this particular hour he/she is. A happy kid, takes happy pictures.
3. Be flexible. Lighting is very important. It rains, it pours, it hails golf balls.
4. Background. It’s cool, but not the most important thing. You are. So make it easy, close and comfortable. It’s not the landscape we are trying to capture, it’s your beautiful faces.
5. AND LAST BUT MOST IMPORTANT, if it feels weird, awkward and like a total mess . . . it was probably beautiful. Strange, but true fact.
