Every year, sometime in June, our Great Eastern Catalpa tree blooms out in the clusters of fragrant, orchid shaped blossoms. The canopy rises about 60’ above our garden and is a sight to behold! Thats why we call her the “Star of the Show”!

We did a major rethink on our “Locks of Love” program. Our original charming little arbor rusted out and was falling over, so we cut out the sides and reframed it in new steel and placed it over another new addition to the garden, my late brother’s swing that he made out of Fir. We’re very pleased with the results and our couples will now have a place to take a break and watch their reception from a distance.

Three weeks ago I posted photos of the Killdeer that laid a clutch of 4 eggs in our parking lot. I am very pleased to report that this past Thursday all 4 successfully hatched under the watchful eye of their mama. Shown in the second shot is the clutch just a couple of hours after hatching. The rest of the shots are from the next day when they got very mobile, very quickly, making things challenging for the mother who was trying to keep them corralled. As is their nature, mother and babies are on walkabout and left our property, just two days after hatching. We took great pleasure in protecting their nest and watching their progress. They will be missed.

This is a Killdeer. A small robin sized shorebird in the plover family. A species prone to knuckleheadedness as shown by its choice in nesting sites… the middle of our gravel parking lot. While not endangered, it is on the protected list and we are doing just that, having roped off its “nest” so that no one will drive over the eggs which need about 3-4 weeks to hatch. The last picture shows the “Where’s Waldo” aspect of their nesting site. (There are 3 eggs in the picture, I assure you). As a kid in New Mexico, I would see them on occasion, and the only way I knew there were eggs is the behavior of the parents; If there are eggs on the nest and a predator approaches, the parents run away from the nest and feign a broken wing, to draw the predators attention to it, rather than the clutch of eggs. (Kind of like a soccer player performing a flop) If one get too close to the parent, then they fly away, taunting “kill-DEER, kill-DEER”, hence their name.

We just opened our 2022 season with a terrific couple, Alex and Mattie, who had a wonderful wedding. So many people are displaying photos, or providing Polaroid cameras for their guests to use, we put in our “door to nowhere”, that features copper wire and micro clips to attach them to. We love it, and hope all our wedding parties use it!
