Congratulations to Lauren & Zac! Two weeks ago we somehow managed to pull off this beautiful wedding the day after Hurricane Helene hit, thanks to a team of dedicated vendors and the fabulous crew at the Canyon Kitchen at Lonesome Valley.
My driveway was blocked by a downed power pole, lines, and a jumble of about 10 trees. I hiked out through the woods and borrowed a car to get there. My boyfriend became my assistant, as I couldn’t get in touch with any of my staff to even know if they were safe. We took detours through a maze of winding back roads, dodging downed trees, power lines, and mudslides, which was especially harrowing on the return trip at midnight - while lacking any cell service or digital navigation.
As a volunteer Assistant Fire Chief, the day of the storm was a blur of chaos that included one of my firefighters getting pinned under a tree, a house burning down with the family loosing everything, a young boy trapped in a collapsed home, and then the horrifying losses that we learned more about in the following days.
My power just returned early this week, and my family and home are safe. Many others were not so lucky. I spent 13 days straight at the fire department, except this wedding day. Like others, I am still processing the devastation that will forever change Western NC. I am grateful and fortunate to be able to volunteer in my community, and will continue to serve those in need in any ways I can. 💗
This wedding was a shining light of love & joy amidst all of the loss, and we were honored to help this dream come true!
