I have forgotten many things over my 2 decades as a mom. I forgot the yearbook last year. Have forgotten to pack lunches, that it was Game Day, and I've even forgotten to pick my kids up from school - many, MANY times.
Today I forgot that it was Mother's Day.
I remembered last week and even months ago when I had big plans to do something - I have lots of big plans. Sometimes they even work out.
This picture is one such plan. Mom and I went to New Orleans just after Mardi Gras and people were still in the City... March, 2020. We had such a great time, we went everywhere and I got my shrimp & grits recipe from Mr. B's - amazing. But wouldn't see each other again for quite a while... We both ended up with Covid. My gift to you, mom. Glad we made it.
My mom never forgets a thing, unlike me. Well, my anniversary date, but in fairness I am also off by a day or two on hers.
Because of her I do know a few things beyond the meaning of life and other obvious serious passalongs, and so do my own girls. We know that you are always dressy with lipstick on. It's important to entertain guests properly, and to that end my kids know how to make Espresso Martinis. Dates come to the door to es**rt you and if they do not they can wait. That basic skill is a pre-requisite for the bigger job. If you sit on scissors before the swim meet you still have to go; if you planned well a nurse lives across the street and helps. Also, don't leave your scissors in the car seat. Vacuuming is better than sweeping. Side with your kids in public, even if they might be wrong. It's never too late to plant Zinnias. Be on time. Make your bed every day. Have disposable towels for drying after hand washing at your nice parties. Get the dress altered. Buy good shoes and keep them longer. Pick the baby up, crying it out should not be a thing. Kids need dogs. Family is everything. And maybe my favorite...If you yell at Wayne Newton enough he will stop a concert to wish your mom happy birthday and that is as it should be. He should have known it to begin with.
Here's to my mom, her mom, and the mom's that will come after us.
Happy Mother's Day!
