For the past several months, a new project has been under development: Aftershock Theatre. Aftershock strives to produce high-quality, meaningful art that speaks to the underrepresented audience of Millennials and Gen-Xers by focusing on the relevancy of the artwork and the socialization factor of the theatre experience. Pittsburgh is notorious both for its high concentration of cultural organizat
ions and for the universities, tech companies, and healthcare providers that are attracting a vibrant group of diverse students and young professionals to the city. There are no performing arts organizations successfully fulfilling the needs of this sector group. As this population segment grows, the need to provide relevant art for them becomes all that much more important. As a new organization, Aftershock Theatre is perfectly positioned to create art with a fresh perspective and deliver relevant and meaningful art experiences that are truly engaging. This will be primarily
accomplished through experimental short and standard-length productions of a minimalistic
nature that highlight the target audience’s issues of interest, and by then extending the discourse raised in the artwork into accompanying programming that focuses on building relationships, both between patrons and between the organization and the audience. At Aftershock Theatre, we hope to make attending the theatre a communal activity again – one which allows individuals to connect, network, engage, and be inspired all thanks to the power of art. We hope to create a space where people come together not only to see a show, but to engage with important ideas and form lasting relationships. A theatre should be more than a performance space; it ought to be an incubator of meaningful discussion where a diverse audience can come and learn not just from our art, but from one another as well. For this to be the case, the artistic and socialization experiences must build on each other. The space we envision is one that can accommodate various artistic interpretations while sustaining an inviting atmosphere that encourages active participation. In order to foster a truly participative audience, a sense of community space is paramount; Aftershock can only thrive if it provides the necessary environment for the artists to put on high-quality work and for the audience to consistently respond with as much commitment.
