Yes, I said *average* meaning many spend less and many spend more! And I don’t mean for a luxury wedding— we are talking a “standard” 2-3 day, typical South Asian wedding including a mehendi/sangeet, ceremony and reception. This number assumes a guest count of 300 (which is considered mid-size for a South Asian wedding believe it or not!)

While this might sound crazy in western culture— South Asian weddings are a culturally monumental event for families—sometimes more for the parents than the couple — for better or for worse. Parents often start saving for their child’s wedding soon after they’re born.

Luxury South Asian weddings are a whole different ballgame— spending $600,000+ is NOT uncommon for families who can afford to 🤯

Lots of new friends here recently so I thought I’d take a moment to say hi!

👋🏽 I’m Anita.

I was born and raised in the Burgh. I left for a decade or so for college and medical school, but like a true yinzer, I eventually came back home for good. I’m a wife, mom and a geriatrician. I love taking care of people, and I realized my creative side is always looking for ways to shine through in a way that isn’t always possible in medicine. I have always been a planner whether it’s planning vacations, parties or my life. I had a weekly planner in college that included when I would shower each day. (I’m very fun.)

The first event I remember planning was when I volunteered to plan our 4th grade class Super Bowl party in 1996. The Steelers may have lost, but that party was a winner.

Creating unique, experiential, highly curated events that leave a lasting impression on your guests is my jam. If that’s your vibe, say hello and let’s talk!

I rarely post my face on here and this is not a headshot or a professional photo of any kind. It’s a selfie I took with my phone on a wedding day that I wanted to share because I can see the happiness on my own face while I do what I truly love. No reason really to share this other than feeling proud of myself for doing what makes me happy.

a highlights version of a typical Hindu wedding ceremony…as you can see, there are a LOT of rituals. These ceremonies can take up to 2 hours! So don’t be surprised when you see guests getting up to stretch their legs or chatting (or just actually yelling across the room…)

Happy Mother’s Day!! Always proud of my mom but especially this year as she continues to show up as for everyone around her as a mother, daughter, grandmother, and doctor even in the face of losing her husband and sister within four months. No one is as strong as you and we love you .

And seeing the world through the eyes of my own two babies makes this whole life worth it 💕

Since we had time between our ceremony and reception and a great team, we repurposed our ceremony florals for reception centerpieces. Great way to keep a cohesive vibe, reduce waste, and save some money!

My favorite part of our wedding weekend was actually a pre-wedding event! Our Sangeet was filled with food, music, dancing and celebrations complete with a bazaar for guests to “shop” for bangles, shawls and colorful bejeweled clutches. Our vibe was moody, glam, and FUN.

Starting Half Light Events was the product of a decade long dream and a powerful bond between an aunt and niece. Though we always hoped to combine our shared love for detail oriented events and our love for each other into a family business, we knew this dream of working together could be short-lived.

I am heartbroken to share the passing of my beautiful aunt and co-founder of Half Light Events, Sandya, after a 6-year battle with ovarian cancer. Sandya is a Sanskrit word meaning “twilight” or “half light.” Funny, because our Sandya was the brightest light to ever exist. Her energy and charisma were unmatched. With Sandya’s blessing, Half Light Events will continue to burn brightly in honor of our namesake.
