What’s a gardener to do when it’s the Sunday between Christmas and New Years and it is 62 degrees out in southwestern Pennsylvania? Plant the hundreds of bulbs that still need to be put to bed for the season!
This is a job I should have completed in October or November but life got busy. I’m tossing the last few bulbs into planter pots and crossing my fingers!
This has worked for me in the past, but I do think it all depends on the weather, the drainage the pot gets, and the type of soil.
I’ll using well-draining soil with a mix of coco coir and potting soil and grouping the pots together to make sure they are protected from harsh freezes. I’ll also throw some leaves in top for some extra protection.
May the strongest survive!

Our Winter Workshops are in full swing! When the days are short, it feels good to make something with your hands.
We have one more December workshop at @reconbrewing at Hastings on 12/19 at 6:00. We will be making holiday centerpieces with sustainable mechanics: no floral foam here!
If you’d like to schedule a private event, please reach out. Our minimum group is five participants.
Stay tuned for more workshops scheduled in 2025!
Our dahlia workshop this past weekend was so much fun!
Would you be interested in a spring dahlia workshop? I’m considering saving a few tuber clumps to use to show how to divide and all of the spring dahlia knowledge like planting, feeding, staking, and harvesting dahlias.
Can you believe that this pumpkin is covered in all local flowers? The blooms are dried in the dark to preserve their color. This pumpkin is topped with hydrangea, Celosia, zinnia, strawflower, and moss!

Real talk: my dahlias aren’t anywhere near where they have been in years past.
I had big plans for these plants, and they just are so slow. I’m blaming the high heat this summer and little rain. Anyone else having these issues?
How to harvest cosmos to get the best vase life.
Please excuse my heavy breathing. 🙃
