Some children spend all day at school trying to be ‘good’. They work hard to meet the expectations and challenges of the classroom, while holding in their true emotions. When they come home to you – their safe space – all their emotions release. They might be angry, tearful, or seem disrespectful. But remember they are physically and emotionally exhausted.

What can we do to help? Try food, water and rest. Validate their emotions – ‘it sounds like you have had a rough day today’. Give them some quiet time, and then find a ritual to decompress. It could be listening to music, watching a favourite TV show, going for a bike ride, or jumping on the trampoline. They have been juggling so many expectations, time with you in their safe space, will help them cope with their overwhelm and breathe again.
