๐ Recently Deborah Kessler attended the annual PR/Journalism award brunch on 4/20/24.
Prof. Raymond Simon created the college's journalism and public relations program in the 1950s, during a time when there were only a handful of such programs in the nation.
He was often referred to as the father of PR, he was a recognized leader in public relations education not only nationally but internationally as well. He truly was a pioneer in the PR profession.
In 1986, in honor of Ray and the public relations degree, the Ray Simon Institute was created.
With a mission to promote public relations education and student achievement, the RAY Simon Institute (RSI) has provided more than $250,000 in student awards and scholarships.
What is the purpose of RSI and itโ mission?
It enhances and supports Utica Universityโs array of communications programs related to journalism and public relations. To achieve this, RSI honors outstanding public relations/journalism alumni or alumna
โข Raises and solicits funding to support public relations- and journalism-related communications programs, students, and faculty.
โข Brings outstanding communications professionals to campus to meet with students and faculty.
โข Recognizes top students in our majors.
โข Helps cover the expenses of an RSI student internship and select summer internships.
โข Sponsors activities for the collegeโs student organizations and media: such as the Tangerine newspaper, UCTV, and WPNR
โข Underwrites field trips so students can experience professional settings in the communications area.
โข Connects UC alumni from PRJ and other communications majors.
How are the scholarships and awards funded?
These are made possible through generous contributions from PRJ alumni and faculty to encourage excellence on the part of students in Utica Universityโs communication majors.
Each year RSI honors an outstanding Alumna, this year Patrica Montone Charvat was selected.
Patricia, Patty is a 1983 graduate of the public relations and journalism program at Utica University. She is currently the senior vice president for marketing and strategy for Mohawk Valley Health System in Utica. In this role, she has supported the planning and development of the new 373-bed Wynn Hospital in downtown Utica. Her work has included a comprehensive community outreach program to engage the healthcare workforce, community organizations, and area leaders.

CABVIโs $1 million Lightning Bug Shootout tournament is held at Twin Ponds in New York Mills to raise funds for Camp Abilities, a youth development program for kids 6 -16 who are blind or visually impaired. During the event, teams compete for a chance to win a variety of big hole-in-one prizes.

Last month we put on the 2024 New York State Public Housing Authority Directors Association (NYSPHADA) Spring Conference at Turning Stone Resort Casino.
The conference included NSPIRE Protocols for Public Housing, Multi-Family, and Section 8 assisted units, keynote speakers, and more!
Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired - CABVI is hosting a new Event- Sips for the Senses! Learn more about CABVI while enjoying food, cocktails, raffles and fun, interactive demonstrations.
The event will be held on April 25 at the Metropolitan Club at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse starting at 5 p.m. Guests are also welcome to stay for the Mets game following the event, and kids under 18 can come to the event for free!
