STORYLINE

Derek is a college student who is staying at his family’s upper middle-class home for the summer to help care for his ailing mother. He is lured out for the night by his childhood best friend, Tyon, and his new buddy, Kevin. In a “borrowed” new Dodge Charger the three young men depart the suburbs, heading for a nearby party to meet some pretty girls and – with any luck – a fun night of debauchery. Halfway to their destination, the guys find themselves re-routed through a very wealthy, very gated community. They become lost within its walls, and among its affluent residents.

Before they can find their way out they witness a man murder a woman inside his home. Temporarily managing to evade the murderer’s pursuit, the three begin a terrifying journey through the community, contending with the various forces hunting them as well as dealing with the widening rifts between them. As the night wears on, the tensions rise along with the body count. Alliances and assumptions on all sides will be stretched to the breaking point. If justice is going to prevail, the community’s darkest secrets must be forced into the light.

But our three young protagonists have the truth on their side. And within “The Gates” - absolutely nothing is more dangerous.

BREAKDOWN OF ROLES

[CHRISTOPHER] 45 to 60 years old, White man. Tall, built like a former lineman. Not a man of many words, but when he does speak, his booming voice carries confidence and conviction. A native Texan that’s traveled the country, he holds traditional values but he’s also learned to find common ground with just about anyone. He prides himself in being able to read a man, and he answers to no one but the almighty. MAJOR SUPPORTING

[DEPUTY BOB CHAMBERS (BOBBY)] 25 to 35 years old, White man. Baby-faced. A young cop that takes his job seriously, he believes he can make snap judgments based on his experience – which he does, in this case, with the best intentions and the worst results. A man of faith, he believes that Jacob speaks the will of Christ, and he sees no reason to ever doubt his intentions. MAJOR SUPPORTING

[ELIZABETH] 22 to 30 years old, White woman. A classic Texas beauty. Men have always been drawn to her, which is why she’s attracted to the one that’s just out of reach – Jacob, whose charm and charisma pair perfectly with his unavailability. Making him desire her was easy; securing his commitment has proven more complicated. And hell hath no fury like a woman scorned – especially when there’s whiskey in this teacup. SUPPORTING

[OFFICER HORTON] 35 to 45 years old, White man. Resting cop-face. An experienced, no-BS officer that strives to serve his community but doesn’t realize how his past experiences have created subtle biases. Despite this flaw, he wants to do what’s right, and he’s not too old to learn from his mistakes. SUPOORTING

[JULISSA] 20 to 25 years old, Mixed Ethnicity woman. Smart, responsible, professional. Despite her youth, she’s already the best nurse at the hospital, and she still finds time to come home to care for her ailing mother. She also happens to be the attractive big sister that has seen her little brother’s friends grow up with crushes on her, and she tolerates their flirtation with a combination of patience and amusement. SUPPORTING

[KENDRA] 35 to 45 years old, Black woman. Elegant, educated, beautiful, very fit and proper. An Omarosa or Candace Owens type. She is well put together and fits right into this posh gated community. But she had to work to get there, and has the fighter's mentality and cunning that got her to this position, and is now maybe a bit defensive about holding her position. SUPPORTING

[ROXY] 20 to 25 years old, White woman. Tattoos, rock-chic hair and attitude. Confident and sexy in a way that young men might fall for, but any le***an would immediately know she’s only for the girls. SUPPORTING

[SHERRY] 45 to 60 years old, Black woman. The only remaining parent of two young adults she’s very proud of. Once a do-it-all mom who juggled a successful career with parenthood, her energy is now tragically sapped by her ongoing battle with cancer, and she draws strength from her loving children. FEATURED

[PRESTON] 20 to 25 years old, White man. Fratty. Rich parents mean he was born into elevated social status. He throws a hell of a party, and he always expects to land the most attractive girl in attendance – because he usually does. FEATURED

[THAD] 20 to 25 years old, White man. Fratty, psyched on the house. Calls Preston his best friend because Preston allows him to. The consummate wing man. FEATURED

[XAVIER] 20 to 25 years old, White man. Talks like he grew up in the hood, likes the idea of having black friends but never really did. But he raps like a gen-z Eminem. FEATURED

[TIFFANY/SHAYNE] 22 to 28 years old, woman. Any ethnicity. Beautiful girls seen on the phone. Pro-level skills at flirting with the camera, enticing the boys to come to a party. FEATURED

THE PROJECT

The purpose of the Eyewitness Bible Series is to help people learn and understand the Bible. Eyewitness will eventually consist of more than 125 video narratives and study guides useful for individuals, families, small groups and churches. The material is entertaining and uniquely effective. And free!

ADDITIONAL INFO

This content will be used as resource material that will accompany an online curriculum that is an in-depth study of the Bible. This resource is offered to churches, Sunday school classes, small home groups, etc. at no charge.

Although biblical characters, we want American accents. Actors need to know these are long monologues, and must have command of all the material. These are filmed monologues of modern interpretations of historical biblical characters to communicate the messages of the Bible from a new vantage point. They illustrate the stories that the authors may have heard from several characters featured. These monologues weave first century political, geographical, and cultural factors to help heighten the understanding of context of the books. Although historically based, these characters have additional personality traits and story lines to create a greater resonance for the viewer.

Tone: The videos aim to strike a tone between first century and modern day. Between the intensity of a classical monologue and the personal connection of a documentary interview. We further underscore the tone by combining historical content with modern American English. Characters address camera. They are intense but ring true. The intent of the characters and essence of the scripts are timeless. We want the viewer to see characters they may have heard about as people like themselves.

The Actors: We are looking for modern-day actors from all walks of life. Good actors that can compel us with their storytelling, and are relatable in a very real, contemporary way. Theater actors with the ability to memorize large chunks of material are welcome but on-camera actors with a great ability to be real and genuine without falling into "Bible performance" is the goal. These monologues will be 15-30 minutes in length and will be shot with multiple cameras with cutaways.

BREAKDOWN OF ROLES

[APOSTLE JOHN] 40 to 50 years old, all ethnicities man. There are those guys who are simply the most patient, loving, outdoorsy survival types. They think deeply, they love deeply, but in a positive “the world is an amazing place” kind of way. And they looooooove helping people.

[TRAVELER] 21 to 40 years old, all ethnicities man. This guy’s pretty set in life. Pretty smart, pretty connected, and in some instances, pretty smug. But given the right circumstance, one that involved life or death, he’s the type that allows it to change everything.

[APPOLLOS] 25 to 35 years old, all ethnicities man. A super-likable hotshot. He is sharp. He muses over heavy things, but somehow makes them relatable. He’s happy to share what he knows because deep down, he really cares about people. He may step on toes a little, he knows it’s heady, but he knows we need it.

[PRODIGAL FATHER] 50 to 65 years old, all ethnicities man. This guy is a jewel of a human. Only people who have chosen to forgive some pretty heavy stuff can be this deep, genuine, and authentic. But he can’t think of any other way to approach life. He’s that deep, genuine, and authentic.

[APOSTLE PETER] 30 to 40 years old, all ethnicities man. So, not the Peter that was 20 when he left his fishing nets and followed the Rabbi Jesus. And not the Peter who was weathered and wise by the time he was crucified by Nero. But somewhere in between. He’s still impetuous, just a tad more seasoned. He’s still an action guy, just feels a twinge in his joints when he does. But that twinkle in his eye when he tells a story, not dimmed one bit. Nor will it as long as he lives.

[JAMES] 35 to 50 years old, all ethnicities man. Salt of the earth. You know the kind, not going to wait for accolades to do what needs to be done. A leader whether they are recognized or not. Not showy, just 100% authentic.

[PRINCESS BERNICE] 40 to 50 years old, all ethnicities woman. The kind of royal vibes that never dim, just season with time. Princess Grace, Princess Diana, Princess Kate, even. They are real people who have had to navigate the coming together of opposing cultures. Gracious but whip smart. Beautiful, but don’t rely on their looks, they are so much more than the eye can see.

[PRISCILLA] 30 to 45 years old, all ethnicities woman. Marriage may have the impression of ball and chain, or at the very least the initial thrill fades with time, but not this girl! Her zest for life, her love for adventure, and her absolute opinion that marriage is a team sport makes her the kind of friend you want living next door. She’s fun, she’s funny, and the world is a better place with her in it.

[ACHSAH] 21 to 27 years old, all ethnicities woman. The girl’s got guts. Partly inherited from her famous father, who was known to be wholehearted. Partly from watching him: man of action, oh, and a spy. She’s young, but she’s smart and gutsy, and goes at life with everything she’s got.

[SAMARITAN WOMAN] 30 to 40 years old, all ethnicities woman. When you’ve been married five times no wonder you’ve decided to just give up on it. You’ve got some road miles, water under the bridge, to say the least. A loner, who truly wishes to not be alone. She’s the type of person who would have her own movie if we could get past the fact that she’s not a man, not an ingenue, and not interested in what we think of her. She would be played by Frances McDormand.
