“History that repeats itself turns to farce. Farce that repeats itself turns to history.”

― Jean Baudrillard, The Agony of Power

…and the cycle repeats: what's old becomes new again, and again, and again.

We're extending an invitation to muralists to (re)imagine a bright future for Port Angeles, Washington.

Yet, how do we envision a future free from the shackles of nostalgia? How do we shed outdated tropes that no longer serve us, and which elements from the past should accompany us into the future?

How do we discern what to carry forward without erasing our collective consciousness or identity?

If our aim is to forge a genuinely unique, sustainable, and fair community, how do we break the pattern of relying on nostalgia to shape our present decisions?

We invite you to reflect on your interpretations and/or experiences through all known art mediums. We encourage you to go beyond the boundaries of your creative freedom and expression for this exhibition.

Artists are encouraged to include any sketches, written word, or concepts based on previous work, that may help the selection committee better understand your design.

We would like selected artists to make a cohesive mural that has a clean flow or transition between the different artists’ works rather than individual pieces. Submissions should reflect how you would approach designing or planning the mural from your own artistic perspective and expertise.

Considerations:

- This piece has extreme visibility from the street - our hope is for the mural to be viewed at a distance.

- We have a skyjack, scaffolding, ladders, paint sprayers, the works. Our goal is to make this a fun and challenging experience for the artists and if specific equipment is needed, please include that in your proposal.

- Paint & materials will be provided.

Geology

I know the origin of rocks, settling
out of water, hatching crystals
from fire, put under pressure
in various designs I gathered
pretty, picnic after picnic.

And I know about love, a little,
igneous lust, the slow affections
of the sedimentary, the pressure
on earth out of sight to rise up
into material, something solid
you can hold, a whole mountain,
for example, or a loose collection
of pebbles you forgot you were keeping.

- Robert King

In the Pacific Northwest, particularly on the Olympic Peninsula, nature has a profound and ongoing impact on our lives and livelihoods. The tides, rivers, and elements continually shape and influence the landscape, carving out new forms and pathways.

Nature serves as both a destructive and creative force, one that humans have long sought to understand, utilize, and sometimes imitate to address complex challenges.

Recognizing nature as the ultimate designer, The Hub seeks collaboration from 4 or more artists to create an exhibit exploring these themes, drawing inspiration from the natural elements of the Pacific Northwest and the natural design process to create something new.

Submissions should reflect how you would approach designing the exhibit from your artistic perspective and expertise.

Considerations:

- The exhibit is visible from the street level on Lincoln Street through the window, so consider how to incorporate the windows and streetscape into the exhibit itself.

- We have a high ceiling and depending on the weight of material, we can hang objects.

- However, the goal will be to use as much of the window spaces and 1,000 square feet of floor space as possible before resorting to hanging anything from the ceiling.

We've dusted off our *public art wall in the back of the building and have prepared it for artists!

Brady has already graced it with a cheeky mural and I've heard rumblings about a Todd Fischer and Larry White collab in the works 👀

*Share the wall and be respectful! If the wall is full and you want space, come and chat with us and we'll figure out where to squeeze ya in!/what to white out!*

Thinking of similar soggy days at The Hub PNW, but in the 1920's when it was Howe's Garage. Probably a lot of mud. So much mud.

At least they were ahead of the time, providing "accommodations for ladies" who needed auto repair on their solo travels to and the . I bet folks went through a lot of tires back then!
