It was absolutely amazing to see so many people come together under one roof to celebrate art and creativity at the Black River Tattoo Convention! The energy, the passion, and the support from everyone who came out to Port Huron made this event something truly special. We’re beyond grateful for the artists, vendors, and attendees who made this weekend unforgettable. Already counting down the days until next year! We can’t wait to make it even bigger and better in 2025! 🤘🏼

Did you get a chance to see the ArtFusion Experiment on day 3 at the show? Five talented artists all collaborated on five separate pieces of art, rotating every three minutes until they were completed! The results were stunning!!! Even more amazing is that the artwork was auctioned off immediately afterwards and we were able to raise over $600 for our charity, Virtual Learning Academy of St. Clair County!!!

We’re excited that the Black River Tattoo Convention is going on this weekend in Port Huron! We wanted to share an interesting historical connection to this event:

When Thomas Edison filed the patent for the electric autographic printing pen in 1876, it was unlikely he considered its effect on the future of the tattoo industry. ✒️

The electric pen was invented for the purpose of making multiple copies of a single document with ease. One of the earliest applications of electric motors in a consumer product, the electric pen utilized a stem-mounted motor which drove a small needle up and down to create a stencil. The stencil was placed in a press where a roller would force ink through the holes thus creating a copy of the original document!

While Edison’s electric pen went out of style with the advancement of other new technologies, Irish-American tattoo artist, Samuel O’Reilly, saw the potential of a second life for the product. O’Reilly adapted the electric pen into the first electric tattoo needle and in 1891 patented a machine that could puncture skin to inject ink 50 times per second. This was a revolutionary development in the world of body art and similar machines are still used to this day.

You can see how the electric pen was used along with many other of Edison’s inventions when you visit the Thomas Edison Depot, which is located right next door to the convention center!

The Depot is currently open 7 days a week from 10am-5pm. Right now we have free admission at this site thanks to a grant from the City of Port Huron and our corporate sponsors - however, donations are greatly appreciated!
