Yesterday I was given the honor of doing a good friend and his new wife’s flowers for their wedding. It’s so special when I get to design for people that I know and love. I started this bouquet with hypericum berries from my parent’s garden and I finished off this bouquet with cosmos from my personal garden. Congratulations Dallas and Stephanie 💗💗💗

Preparing for a white wedding that will be happening during a heat dome is tricky business. White flowers show their displeasure with anything by browning. Too much heat, too much breeze, too close to cooler walls. So I especially was careful with the blooms I chose. All of these flower choices should hopefully hold up gorgeous the whole evening even with 97 degrees. This is another reason to hire a professional florist.

How do you celebrate? I usually stay home and watch the fireworks from my back deck that overlooks Oaks Park fireworks display and keep my cat company. I might bbq some hotdogs.

Here’s one of the biggest reasons why you hire a wedding florist. The majority of time I spend on your wedding is the processing of the flowers. That means de-thorning, de-leafing, sometimes smashing the stems with a hammer or dipping in boiling water, or sometimes soaking the entire flower underwater for hours. Cutting the stems at an angle, treating the water with flower food. Changing buckets with fresh water regularly. Opening up the flowers till they’re in perfect most beautiful openess. Reflexing petals. I start my wedding week on Monday. I go to the market at 5:30 am to get the best, freshest, most interesting blooms. And then I spend the next 3-4 days “processing” the flowers. It’s SUPER tedious.
If you are trying to plan a budget wedding, I suggest DIY some of your decor that isn’t perishable and leave your flowers to the experts. We’ve already done the science experiments to know how to create a bouquet that will last through your ceremony.

After 15+ years of being a wedding photographer, there are bound to be some odd patterns. One of my favorites: Sarahs. I don't always know how these wonderful Sara(h)s find me, but they do---and they often bring these veils with them, along with amazing partners, places, and adventures. Magical things happen. It's strange, and wonderful, and I've just learned to roll with it. So if you call, and your name is Sara(h), just expect that I may be a little extra-excited.

Using big statement pieces like this at your wedding can ultimately save you money. These arrangements were used at the sign-in table, then used at the ceremony to frame the bride and groom, and then used in front of the sweetheart table during the reception.
