✨ Community Altar Creation with Savahna & Jayce✨
This liminal season between the light and dark halves of the year is considered by many cultures to be a sacred time for remembering and honoring the spirits of the dead. Join us at Alder Commons as we gather to build an altar honoring our community's ancestors, share stories about our own dearly departed, and learn a bit about how to start an altar practice at home.

The altar will be constructed on Monday evening and then left intact in the AC lounge so that community members may continue to add photos, flowers, small tokens, and food & drink offerings throughout the coming weeks (which happen to include Dia de Mu***os, Samhain, All Souls Day, and more!)

Nothing but your presence is required to participate, but you may get the most out of the experience if you bring the following with you:

photos of any deceased loved ones or cultural ancestors (of course you can put Marsha P. Johnson on an ancestor altar!) you wish to honor
natural items that remind you of them or help you feel connected to them, the spirit world, the Earth, etc. (flowers, acorns, crystals, pinecones, etc.)
empty picture frames of all sizes if you have any you don't need and could donate
a treat to share with fellow participants and the ancestors (please bring a recipe or list of ingredients if you choose to offer this)
This course is facilitated by Savahna and Jace!

The wheel of the year is turning from light to darkness, or from the dry season to the rainy season in the Pacific Northwest. Here at Alder Commons we are holding space for the numerous peoples around the world who take this transitional time as an opportunity to honor those who have transitioned out of this life and into the land of the dead.

Join us Monday evening, October 28th from 6-8pm for a workshop where we will create a multicultural ancestor altar for our community members, share stories about our experiences with our own ancestors, and learn how to start an altar practice at home.

If you are unable to attend the altar creation workshop, you can bring photos, flowers, small tokens, and food & drink offerings to the community altar any time between October 29th and November 3rd.

Masks work, especially respirators. N95, KN95, KF94, and FFP2 masks are classified as respirators. Worn correctly, they provide about 95% filtration of airborne particles.

Visit our mask guidelines page to learn more about why masks are a crucial public health measure.

Next weekend!! get DEATHY READY! (an amazing 4-week exploration of, you guessed it, DEATH).

Course Descriptions
Week 1 Remembering and Being Remembered
In this workshop we’ll delve into the heart of why you remember people in your life who have died and explore what it is about being remembered that matters to you. From there, we’ll consider the impact you may have on others when you die. We’ll also be considering how to individually and uniquely honor the memory of your loved one who has died.

Week 2 Values, Wishes, and Who/What Matter Most
Along with the holistic workbook Seven Tools for Making Sense of Life and Death, this workshop will help you articulate your core values and how they affect your living and dying. You’ll connect with your current hopes and fears around death, and get clearer on who and what matter most.

Week 3 The 5-Minute Legacy Love Letter
Using six prompts, you’ll write at least one lasting message to an important person in your life. You’ll have time to reflect on and connect to that relationship and discover how it can affect the relationship in the present. This powerful tool can also be used to assist others who may be experiencing loss.

Week 4 Nine Things to Include in Your Departure Directions ™
A highly practical workshop where we discuss your written guidelines for how you wish to be cared for and remembered after you die. Completing – or even starting – your Departure Directions ™ can give you peace of mind knowing your final wishes will be honored by the people you leave behind. This workshop will include a brief discussion of eco-friendly ways of body disposition.
