If I had to pick one thing I got to create last year that made my year, it was this floral headband for my bride Carmen. Not only did it hold up all day and night there was a LOT OF DANCING!

This baby required wiring, taping and gluing and professional hair pinning to keep the head band and her hair perfect. So perfect!

With mocha mousse being crowned the Pantone color of the year, expect cappuccino, toffee roses, and Koko Lokos to continue to be scarce and expensive.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask for the color you love but it does mean you should trust your florist to get you flowers in your colors that fit your budget. Being informed is a good thing. These flowers are incredibly expensive, per stem at wholesale. You will need to have a realistic budget for your flowers if you want to have these flowers in your wedding.

It’s very important for most couples to honor those who came before us and those we love who are no longer with us. There are many ways to do this. Some will have an altar with past photos of happy times or photos specifically in remembrance. Some will have a space at the reception if the ceremony is in a different location.

Others choose to light candles or have flowers in a special space or incorporated in to the ceremony. You may choose to honor somebody more privately by wrapping your bouquet with a family rosary, lockets with loved one’s photos, or a ribbon made from a piece of their wedding attire.

It is incredibly difficult sometimes not to feel overwhelmed by our grief, it doesn’t matter how many years have passed. Make sure that if you are honoring somebody, you are doing so in a way that you can handle and balances your desire to honor them without losing sight of the fact that they love you, and your joy is and always was their joy even if a remembrance that day is not something you can handle.

Please industry friends of Oregon do not say you are an ally unless you are willing do two things today:

1. Sign up for information and as a supporter of the proposed Equal Rights Fir All ballot initiative for 2026 (yes we very likely will lose marriage equality in 2025 right here in Oregon because of a 2004 constitutional amendment currently on hold from being law in this state by court ruling ONLY). This would guarantee marriage equality as a right in our state constitution.

2. Spread the word, support Basic Right’s Oregon (BRO) every day - donate, join their newsletter, volunteer and show up every time we are needed in the coming years!

The best advice I can give you is don’t follow the sources that asked you to not look at the content of somebody’s character, but rather the demographic you fit in to.

Yes many people can and did support the rally cry of slavery that humanity, freedom, and civil rights should be “states rights” issues, even if they stand to lose their own rights and freedoms. You can blame this on what you will, but they didn’t bother to learn our history or they want exactly the evils of our past to be our future.

It’s not a time to give up but it is a time to wake up. See that we are not all treated or seen as equal. They’re coming for Obergafell next and in Oregon we need to pass a Constitutional Amendment to cement equality of marriage in to law. If all we have left are states rights - this state voted in 2004 to say “marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman”. It was evil then, and it’s dangerous now. We need to fix it! help us protect our rights.

I’m going to need others in our industry to speak up we need to make Oregon an Equal Marriage state - we are not one and that case is about to fall. We need to get this on the next state ballot.

Happy Birthday to my daughter Riley! She is a real world super hero and I’m so proud of the brilliant and incredible woman she has become. I think everyone’s goal as a parent is to hope your kids will grow to be their own wonderful human and even more than that she’s grown to be a woman I admire for her strength, courage, and kindness.

On a hot summer night, at an outdoor wedding, a lot of folks don’t really want to eat cake. Even if you are doing a cutting cake or cake for some, ice cream is always a great dessert option!

Our Director, Sadie McIntyre, is a certified professional wedding planner who began planning weddings in San Diego, CA in 1999, and has experience planning non-profit, political campaign events, and weddings here in Portland, OR, over the past 16 years. She decided to start Vareus Events in 2017 to bring her wealth of experience to the Portland couples who are looking for a partner to help them plan their wedding.
