Today it was the kids turn for Halloween treats! We had doors decorated in the lounge for the kids to get their treats, fun games, pumpkin decorating, lunch, and lots of candy for all the little goblins. Thank you to our members who donated all of the candy…..left some there for you to enjoy on Wednesday evening. A special thanks to the members of the Activity Committee who were on hand to help make the day special for the kids.

Office Regan from the SP Police Department and his canine friend Bedi was a big hit with the kids, too.

Donating the leftover candy to the Milestone Outreach Team who will share with unsheltered folks on Thursday. A fun time was had by all.

A fun night at Lodge 188 with a 50s theme Halloween celebration. While the night was filled with fun and lots of laughs, our members took time for a moment of silence to remember the 18 members of the Lewiston community, who were also enjoying an evening of fun with family and friends, but tragically lost their lives one year ago.

The kitchen at Elks Lodge 188 was busy today, and smells great! Today’s crew made 60+ loaves of bread for Saturday’s Harvest Craft & Bake Sale: banana, blueberry, pumpkin, zucchini, date nut and lemon. And in between the volunteers, Kim and Leeanne were preparing and serving lunch to the Greater Portland Board of Relators in the ballroom. Tomorrow we’ll be baking cakes and cookies! Today, members from our Elks Lodge took part in the annual Vets Stand Down Day. Lodge 188 was at the Forest Ave Hannaford passing out boxed lunches to veterans who were in attendance. A large variety of local organizations were also on hand assisting veterans.

Stand downs were started in 1988 by two Vietnam veterans. Named for a military term for a combat unit's time to rest and recover while at war, today it is a grassroots effort to offer the same services to homeless veterans.

Thank you Willie Goodman, Martha Binette, Barbara Pileggi, Stephanie Ingraham, Lillian Wakefield and Dennis Rickett for being there representing Lodge 188.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you haven’t had your mammogram this year, now is the time to book it!

NBCAM was founded in 1985 in partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now part of AstraZeneca, producer of several anti-breast cancer drugs). The aim of the NBCAM from the start has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.

In 1993 Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of the Estée Lauder Companies, founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and established the pink ribbon as its symbol, though this was not the first time the ribbon was used to symbolize breast cancer. A 68-year-old California woman named Charlotte Haley, whose sister, daughter, and granddaughter had breast cancer, had distributed peach-color ribbons to call attention to what she perceived as inadequate funding for research. In the fall of 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors.

October 18 is Wear Pink Day, remembering those we have lost and honoring those we love who have survived breast cancer. Get your pink ready!!!
