I've walked past these hands for eight years. Eight years of imagining flowers right there. But somehow the timing never felt right, I never felt brave enough to go ask the neighbor who's yard it was in, I felt unsure of exactly what it was I wanted to create or for what purpose.
There was something about the deep red roses against the grey sky and diffused light that set the spark. I got brave enough to ask the neighbor I never met if I could make a floral installation in her yard and and she told me this was great timing because she had lost one of her next door neighbors recently who loved those hands. She would put joints in them for 4/20 and decorate them for Halloween. They said her wife could use a boost and she knew she would love this project too.
Then the wife comes out to say hi and we know eachother from walking our dogs around the neighborhood. She is so excited to see that I'm creating something beautiful just because. She tells me the owner of the yard I'm in's birthday was yesterday and what a nice gift for her! She loved seeing the process and took a video to send to more neighbors.
More neighbors walked by while I was working, introducing themselves, asking questions, and taking joy in this free living art display going up in their neighborhood.
And I got to play! I got to feel the joy of creating without purpose, withought it being client or profit driven. I brought joy and felt joy. I danced as I reflexed roses in the rain. I truly played. No pressure to accomplish anything. And I realized that's what we ALL needed right now. PLAY. BEAUTY. JOY. HOPE. And not for any reason but just because I can, because we can.
The universe knew it was time to fill those hands and I'm glad I heard it calling.
