Portland Ovations is honored to welcome Mary Wellehan to the Board of Directors!

Mary Wellehan (she/her) is an artist and educator with 24 years of experience teaching middle school art in both Seattle and Maine. Throughout her career, she has taken on various leadership roles at the departmental and district levels, helping to shape arts education. Mary holds a degree in Theatre Arts from Holy Cross, where her focus on set and lighting design led to a lifelong passion for sharing the arts. Growing up surrounded by musicals, plays, and symphonies, along with afternoons spent in dance classes, she developed a deep sense of self and creative expression. Now, Mary channels that passion into creating ceramics, crafting both decorative and functional pieces in porcelain. Her artistic journey is deeply rooted in her commitment to making a positive impact through the arts.

"Dear Evan Hansen" has multi-generational appeal, this is not just a show for young people. This contemporary story also features a strong story of the relationships between parents and children. The moms Heidi Hansen and Cynthia Murphy are two examples of parents navigating the challenges of raising kids in the digital, connected/disconnected age.

Maeve from Lyseth Elementary was in the audience for a School-Time Performance of the Ovations original production "Wabanaki Stories". Like so many other students, a memorable moment was seeing the large scale puppet of Jenu the Ice Giant (pronounced chee-noo) on stage during Jennifer Pictou's (Mi'kmaq) riveting retelling of the Wabanaki legend.

Join Ovations and our friends at the Portland Public Library in reading and discussing novels related to characters and themes in three of Ovations’ Broadway offerings this season. This is a free event!

The first reading is 'Memento Mori' by Eunice Hong.

Don’t look back.
Did Eurydice want to return from the underworld? Did anybody ask?
In this brilliant portrait of rage and resilience, a Korean woman tries to connect with her younger brother and grapple with family tragedy through bedtime stories that weave together Greek mythology, neuroscience, and tales from their grandmother’s slipping memory.

Elaina from Helena H. Dyer Elementary enjoyed the School-Time Performance of "Cenicienta: A Bilingual Cinderella Story" and drew their reaction to the experience, the main character of the play Belinda and some of the objects the character used to bring her own retelling of Cinderella to life on stage. We really love the attention to detail including the green hearts decorating the corners of the page and the note 'I like everything and you are talented.' We hope Elaina still remembers this live performance experience!

All this week Ovations is celebrating Arts in Education Week, a national celebration recognizing the transformative power of the arts in education.

Ovations invites students who attend all School-Time Performances to give feedback about their experience. We also give students the option to draw their favorite scenes. After the April, 2023 performance of "Ugly Duckling", Gabby from Reiche School in Portland drew this beautiful scene from the play showing the duckling and his brother playing hide and seek by the pond. This illustration is a great example of the impact of live storytelling on young people. Engaging with stories that represent identities or experiences young people can relate to has a positive impact in many ways, including emotional development, self-esteem, language development, and community building.

Last month, Katelyn Manfre, Ovations’ Director of Community Programs and Partnerships, traveled to Seattle, WA for the Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability Conference. Led by The Kennedy Center and the VSA International Network, LEAD provides an opportunity for arts and culture professionals to develop best practices and resources, engage in conversations with colleagues and experts from around the world, and learn practical methods for designing inclusive arts experiences and environments.

Over three days, Katelyn attended sessions on inclusive program development, front of house and customer service initiatives, technical innovations, and community cultivation—among many others. It was an illuminating, invigorating week!

In addition, Katelyn was selected to present at this year’s conference, alongside colleagues from the Folger Shakespeare Library and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Their session focused on front of house preparations to ensure accessibility in non-traditional or new performance spaces. Katelyn shared Ovations’ Venue Walkthrough Checklist, originally developed by Katie Day, our Director of Communications, with colleagues from across the country. Ovations uses this checklist to audit new venues ahead of each performance season and helped us develop dedicated accessibility information pages for each venue.

Portland Ovations and OBSESSED Presents
Life Be Lifin’ Starring Monét X Change
Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 8 PM
State Theatre, Portland

Monét X Change never wanted to be a drag queen. She never wanted to be an opera singer either. Now an R&B singing, theatre writing, comedic triple threat, Monét explains on stage with just herself and a mic how she became those exact things. With the ability to make audiences cry as quickly as she makes them laugh, Monét X Change guides her audiences through a poignant, darkly humorous coming-of-age story in her newest one woman show, “Life Be Lifin.’”
