The world seems a little darker today. RIP to the one and only Phil Lesh. Bassist Phil Lesh left his imprint on the Grateful Dead, and indeed, all of rock-n-roll. The Dead’s long history with the Crystal Ballroom includes recording live tracks for Anthem of the Sun there in 1968, and Phil Lesh & Friends returned to the Crystal twice on the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the original show. To say he left his imprint on us might be an understatement. Walk into any McMenamins, and you’ll find lyrics from Grateful Dead songs painted along the walls, their music playing, or even Deadhead memorabilia and artwork. In 2018, we gave Phil Lesh a copy of "The Many Lives of the Crystal Ballroom" by McMenamins' historian, Tim Hills who wrote about that legendary show in the book. Phil Lesh shared a few personal stories about the first time he played the Crystal Ballroom on the Dead’s Great Northwest Tour. Take a moment to remember Lesh with us. His innovation and contribution to music will live on at McMenamins and throughout the music world.
