Growing Pains - band • with special guests Mauve & Rhododendron • Friday, Aug. 2nd
Playwright Antonin Artaud once wrote: “I abandon myself to the fever of dreams, in search for new laws.” For Portland-based indie quartet Growing Pains, the dream world is where apathy ends, and euphoria begins. For six years, Growing Pains have mastered the art of surrendering to the dream, embracing it, and returning with pocket-sized indie rock symphonies to prove it. Since 2018, Growing Pains have been writing and performing blue-tinted indie rock, spritzed with emo, power pop, and shoegaze influences.
Formed in 2018 at an after-school music program, the members of Growing Pains communed over a collective adoration for Joyce Manor and Blink-182. They soon made rounds through the Portland DIY circuit, playing scene staples such as Blackwater and Fail House. After releasing their debut album Heaven Spots, the band temporarily relocated to Eugene, where they wrote their next project. Leaving their pop-punk influences at home, the group took influence from the frenzied side of indie rock—choosing to channel the phantasmic soundscapes of My Bloody Valentine and disarranged stimulantics of Broken Social Scene.
The fruition of this was the 2023 EP Through I Heard Your Car, a 5 song meditation on past laments; l'esprit d'escalier in musical form. Produced at home by the band alongside Portland and Philadelphia DIY veteran Nathan Tucker (Cool Original, Strange Ranger), this EP is the band’s most focused effort—a piece of musical ekphrasis made through reconstructions of nostalgia’s lack. The release saw the band rocket through the PNW music scene, playing shows with indie luminaries Franz Ferdinand and Beabadoobee. Growing Pains will take on the west coast this summer, touring from Vancouver, BC down to San Diego, CA, before returning to the studio to record their second LP this fall.

ESG is bringing the dance party back to Portland on Saturday, September 14th with Dirt Twins and Strange Babes at Wonder Ballroom, presented by Mississippi Records!
Formed in the South Bronx in 1978. Their unique mix of hip hop and punk has never been replicated, though many have tried. ESG's hit "UFO" is one of the most sampled songs of all time. It cannot be overstated how important this band is. Even more important than their irreducible originality is the fact that this band will MAKE YOU dance.

Check out “Light Your Way Home” and get your tix for May 6th! “’Light Your Way Home’ is definitely one of our favorites from Up On Gravity Hill,” the band’s Alex Edkins explained. “I was listening to lots of Jesu and Low (as I do most winters) when writing this one.” Edkins continued: Lyrically, it’s about missing your loved ones to the point of losing your grip on reality. We distorted and added a mechanical slap back to the drums to create a wild and huge sound. I love how big we got the production on this one. It’s like nothing we’ve ever made before, sonically or lyrically. Amber Webber (Black Mountain, Lightning Dust) was so great to work with, and her voice just takes this song to another stratosphere. I think the video by Colin Medley perfectly captures the vibe and intent of the song.
