Opening next Friday, January 27: Fernanda D'Agostino’s 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘺𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 (𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺), an installation of a series of projection sculptures based on the beautiful nests of tent caterpillars.
“One of my earliest memories is of holding a tent caterpillar in my hand at around age three and asking my mother if caterpillars have a soul. I was fascinated by their gorgeous nests and by the process of transformation unfolding inside them. Chrysalis is a deep dive into answering the broader question contained within my childhood sense of marvel, and an examination of the strange sacredness of living things. It also revels in how all things are intertwined and hopes to expose the idea of singularity as a paradox. Seventy years after that original question I'm also fascinated by the possibility of emerging from one state of being into another. Or of merging–if emerging is not what's next.” – Fernanda D’Agostino

ÌṢERÉ, 2022

Completed a new (and much-improved) hand-#tufted and #arduino powered sound sculpture showing @oregoncontemporary with a slew of talented artists - courtesy of @home.school.pdx (and specifically, @mabreu91's hard work) from November 4 2022 - January 8 2023, in a group show entitled "i gently place my brain in cold rice"!
✨
"Ìṣeré" is a Yorùbá word meaning "toy," and I was once again inspired by traditional West African patterns and the bright colors you'd find at a school or daycare when creating this #instrument. Each two-toned rectangle is one note on an octave, and the pitch bender works on multiple notes if playing concurrently. It's mounted in painted wood with gold brass corners.
While the intention is to use it to produce music with a DAW, its build as a MIDI controller means it can be mapped for use with other non-music related programs as well.
I'm really proud of the hardiness and functionality of this work, and grateful to have the opportunity to have folks play with it! Swipe to the 3rd slide for a lil ambienty demo in #Ableton ✨
Performance artist Baby LeStrange will be performing at Carla Rossi’s Hell House Halloween on October 29. Baby has been mind boggling audiences since 2008. She has been given many tag lines over the years from Glittering Misfit, Mistress of Awkward, Empress of Eccentricity and Countess of Camp. Baby started performing in the world of Burlesque and over the years starting adding elements of drag and video production onto the stage. Wowing audiences from New York City to Tokyo, Baby has also had the pleasure of performing for Dolly Parton in Tennessee. Alongside performance. Baby also produces Black Lodge Burlesque, an all David Lynch themed cabaret.
From Baby: “I will be taking elements of bizarre performance and video production to showcase everyones autumnal guilty pleasure, Pumpkin Spice. The audience will be going on a journey of PSL, pumpkin spice lust. One sip sends me into a fever dream of madness induced by artificial flavors and colors. Lust, gluttony and greed are the sins that I will be representing in Hellhouse. I can’t wait to take you on my deranged trip around the pumpkin patch.”
Tickets available now at the link in our bio.

In his piece, Line Drawing 5, @petergronquist processes the frequency of Hawking radiation from the Messier 87 black hole through transducers to create a mesmerizing visual and aural mediation.
There is something profound about watching water behave in a way that runs counter to daily experience. This work makes me think of the scale of things.

On view starting today: 𝘗𝘌𝘈𝘒𝘐𝘕𝘎, a solo exhibition by Rick Silva curated by Ashley Stull Meyers. The exhibition centers on Silva’s newest video work of the same name, which visualizes over a million variations of a floating mountain peak interacting with fluctuating graph lines.
Modeled from the granite and glacial formations of the Cascade Mountain Range, these virtual renderings are paced to mirror the geologic deep-time of our regional landscape. The visual language of “graphs” is abstractly leveraged, surging and dipping to mimic data sets often experienced on our screens: ocean temperatures, air quality, financial markets, covid cases, and heart rates. As the frequency of the formations in 𝘗𝘌𝘈𝘒𝘐𝘕𝘎 escalate, so does the sentiment of “peaking” itself, in its sublime quantifications, ecstasies, and precipices. The video installation is accompanied by a new body of smaller works that explore further connotations of “peaking” in our present environment.
