Atlee Coler + Tom Reese
June 1, 2024
Portland, ME

A small, intimate wedding turned out to be the perfect choice for Atlee and Tom, who profess to being very relaxed and low-key people. “We actually were planning for a big, white wedding, but then decided that wasn’t for us,” says Atlee, who adds that she and Tom have been together for seven years. “We really don’t like being the center of attention. So it turned out to be a very budget-friendly wedding, with just 20 of our closest friends and family at the ceremony and then 80 to 90 at the reception for apps and an open bar.”

Atlee says she learned about the park at Eastern Promenade in Portland, where the ceremony was held, from her aunt. Then guests met up at DeMillo’s on the Water for a casual, fun-filled reception. “DeMillo’s was very affordable, and they were wonderful to work with. They’re right on the docks—we got some
amazing photos.”

Atlee’s simple dress was offset by her mother-in-law’s 1980s veil from Saks, which was re-crafted by her sister-in-law to be more updated. “My mother-in-law is a wonderful part of our life,” says the bride, “and I wanted to honor her on our special day.” Atlee’s favorite memory of the day was the couple’s first dance, which they weren’t going to do, but which a friend staged. “It ended up being such a special moment.” Tom adds, “For me, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face at the park, seeing all our friends as Atlee arrived.

And baby makes three! That was the surprise element as Emily planned her huge dream wedding for 298 guests. “I planned this big wedding for two years,” she says, “and about halfway through I got pregnant!” At six weeks, baby Evelyn joined her parents for some photo ops and then retired for a nap at Black Point Inn.“ My mom and grandma actually walked down the aisle with her, so it was three generations,” says Emily.

The bride says she couldn’t have pulled off her wedding extravaganza without the help of Christina at Pinch Me Planning. “She really went the extra mile for us, especially during my pregnancy. I had the vision boards in the beginning, and she knew the right people to make it happen.” Emily adds, “My vision for the color scheme was neutrals—mocha bridesmaid dresses and ivory-taupe linens—and I knew the white flowers would pop against that. I wanted to be able to look back at the photos years later and know it would still look classy and elegant.”

Emily loved the choice of Brick South for the reception. “It was a blank slate, and we could do whatever we wanted with it.” But her favorite part of the day was the first look with her dad—yes, her dad!—when she surprised him with some personal mementos of the day. “I wanted him to have a first look so we could get the tears and some of the emotion out of the way beforehand,” she says.

To the mothers who hold it all together — today and every day.

Photo 1: "Capturing the grand moments at weddings is a natural part of the day, but it’s the in-between moments—the fleeting emotions—that truly tell the story. Like a mother’s tears during the speeches at this candlelit reception at The Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport. I love capturing these small, beautiful, fleeting moments that might otherwise be missed. Documenting the small moments along with the grand ones allows me to tell the full story of the wedding day." Photo and caption by Weddings By Heidi Kirn.

Photo 2: "This was an incredibly sweet moment. We were in the church waiting for the ceremony. The groom was in the back hallway and his mom went to see him. This is her reaching out to him moments before he is married." Photo and caption by Kelly Stevens Photography.

Photo 3: "The bride’s mother sees her in her dress for the first time. Another timeless moment that neither of them will ever forget." Photo and caption by Brendan Bullock Photography.

Photo 4: "The mother of the bride shows the groom the custom cufflinks they had made for the father of the groom with a photo of the bride and her father on them." Photo and caption by Emily Delamater Photography.

Photo 5: "The bride’s parents look on as the couple has their first dance. Capturing not only the couple and what they are doing, but also the reactions of their family and friends is one of my favorite things to do during the ceremony and reception." A moment for the bridesmaids!

Photo 2: "A little bit of movement goes a long way for your bridal party photos, and adds a unique, fun element to get everyone involved." Photo and caption by Renaud Film and Photo.

Photo 3: "Bridesmaids hug the bride after the ceremony. I love quiet moments like this. Weddings often have an element of fantasy, but this feeling of love and connection between friends is powerful and real." Photo and caption by Brendan Bullock Photography.

Happy May! Today we're sharing a trending simple solution to the dreaded boutonniere pinning - pocket square boutonnieres!

Our panel of experts weighed in on one of the most clever trends we’ve seen in awhile—the pocket square boutonniere! This pocket full of posies is an easy solution to the struggle many grooms and groomsmen face when it’s time to pin that pesky boutonniere on their jacket lapel. “Recently, we’ve been enjoying designing this modern interpretation of the pocket square,” says Rachael Smith Brown, owner of Fleur De Lis Floral Design & Gifts. “Sans the need for pins and minimal disruption when embracing.” The concept is simple; your florist builds the boutonniere flowers into a liner that easily slips into the jacket pocket. “I made these for a wedding with 12 groomsmen,” says Jenna Arnold, owner of Fern and Flower Company. “Then I actually got a note from the photographer thanking me for all the time they saved him.”

Though Colleen and Erik lived in New York City during their wedding planning, they chose the idyllic setting of The Crane Estate as their venue. “Ipswich is close to my heart, because I grew up spending summers at my uncle’s cottage in Essex, and Ipswich is right around the corner,” says Colleen. “We’d go out on the boat, and I could see the whole estate from the water.

I always said, ‘I’m going to get married there.’ The minute my mom found out we were engaged, she put down a deposit for us!” Though the estate “looks like a castle,” Colleen says, “We went for a more organic, eclectic vibe that fit our personalities, rather than a fairy-tale wedding.”

The bride’s stunning dress was “fashion forward, with the really large-format lace and understated sexiness of a little sheerness to it,” she explains. For the bridesmaids, she chose a palette of “soft, late-summer pastel colors.” Her flowers were simple and locally sourced. “I didn’t want my flowers to overshadow the natural beauty of the estate.”

As a special touch to the day, one of Erik’s childhood friends took bagpipe lessons so he could pipe the wedding procession down the outdoor aisle. “We had to delay the ceremony by about 15 minutes to let a rainstorm pass through, which made me nervous about whether this was going to be pulled off. But once Jim started playing the bagpipes, my nerves just faded away and I thought, ‘This is really happening.’”
