“Part of my practice is imagining musical family trees and learning from the influences of my influences... I gravitate towards forgotten songs, early or maligned instruments, and languages and performance styles on the brink of extinction. I bring this process of excavation into my own writing, blending old and new, exploring language and mythology. I have been making the unoriginal yet concerted effort to move beyond categorizing music by genre. What I am interested in is exploring, celebrating, and making fun of desire, divulging secrets, dredging up the past, looking under the rug.” —Cecile McLorin Salvant

#PUCsoundBites: “What does home mean to you?”
We asked this of our audience members after our opening event of our 2024-25 #HealingWithMusic series and the opening performance of our season, “Syria: Art in a Time of Crisis.” During this event, Syrian clarinetist @kinan_azmeh and Syrian-Armenian visual artist @kevork_mourad presented their originalwork “Home Within,” a reflection on the Syrian revolution and its aftermath, and then joined award-winning international correspondent @amos.deb to discuss the impact of war on our sense of “home,” and how they use image and sound to establish a sense of sustained urgency and continued hope for both their homeland and communities around the world.
Thank you, Somar, for sharing your reflections with us and for attending this event with your brother.

2/3 Happy #InternationalDogDay! Sound on!
At PUC, we invite you to LISTEN YOUR WAY. In honor of today’s holiday, we are shining a spotlight on dogs listening THEIR way and on pup-inspired music!
Frédéric Chopin Waltz in D-flat major, Op. 64, No. 1 is sometimes known as "Valse du petit chien," French for "Waltz of the puppy.” It’s popularly known in English as the "Minute Waltz." It is said that in writing this piece Chopin was inspired by the antics of a small dog chasing its tail. This recording is played by Sir Stephen Hough, who will appear on our 24/25 season alongside the Takács String Quartet on Thursday, February 20, 2025!
Thank you to our colleagues who submitted photos of their dogs for this video!
