Do you go to the movies or just stay home and stream?

In a today's NYT newsletter, Melissa Kirsch wrote, "Each movie I saw in the theater, I talked about afterward, with the friends accompanying me, with colleagues the next day. Some of the movies I’ve streamed — some abandoned before completion — I’ve discussed with no one. As the Times critic A.O. Scott wrote in his wonderful essay “Is It Still Worth Going to the Movies?”: “Just as streaming isolates and aggregates its users, so it dissolves movies into content. They don’t appear on the platforms so much as disappear into them, flickering in a silent space beyond the reach of conversation.” I’m willing to wager that no filmmaker ever made a movie hoping or expecting that it would end up beyond the reach of conversation."

Which movies are you talking about?

Doc Spotlight: If you could see only one film..."Bring Your Own Brigade" is director Lucy Walker's powerful look inside environmental and social impacts from the 2018 Camp Fire that burned through communities in California and destroyed the town of Paradise. It asks the question that faces us now: Does society have what it takes to put aside short-term interests and outmoded thinking to confront a crisis that’s quite literally burning our world to the ground? Searing and masterful work. See this film! Available here https://watch.eventive.org/peff through Sunday Oct. 24.

Doc Spotlight: Don't miss the striking, beautiful film "Baato" -- a journey through the heart of a changing Nepal. It follows Mikma and her family, who collect medicinal herbs around their home nestled in the Himalaya of northeastern Nepal, on an annual 300-kilometer migration, partly on foot and partly by ramshackle vehicle, to urban markets in the lowlands. The route of a partially complete trans-national highway project promises to transform this roadless Himalayan valley permanently, opening up a direct transport route between China & India. Directed by Kate Stryker & Lucas Millard, follow the film at https://www.facebook.com/Baatodocfilm/. Available at the PEFF through Sunday 10/24 https://watch.eventive.org/peff

Doc Spotlight: "Rust" directed by Rafał Małecki. The film follows artist Mariola Wawrzusiak-Borcz who roams post-industrial areas in search of scrap metal. During the welding process she creates the sculptures of endangered animals and children affected by war. When the air quality in the city deteriorates, she leaves home together with her family to wait out the difficult time in close contact with nature. Don't miss the opportunity to see this deeply moving film, available through Sunday 10/24. See it at https://watch.eventive.org/peff https://www.facebook.com/RUST.ART.FILM
