Here’s the “dirt” on composting and a few tips you need to know:
-Plants can be grown in compost, but it’s best to mix compost with topsoil.
-Before adding compost to compacted soil, use a hand tool to gently cultivate it. This will make the nutrients more accessible to your plants and prevent damage to their roots.
-Composting can improve plant growth by adding nutrients, balancing soil density, and discouraging weeds, pests and disease.
-Compost can get too warm for some crops, but is perfect for others.
-Compost can contain minerals that can be toxic to some plants. If you’re concerned, you can test your compost.
-A compost pile or bin doesn’t have to take up a ton of space. As a matter of fact, you can DIY your own!
-Water your compost, but don’t let it get too wet.
Even though most of New Jersey’s kids are off from school this week, we couldn’t help but educate one of our Perna’s employees nephew on what composting is and how he could do his part. Max helped us to compost all of our end of summer herbs and plants, just in time to prepare for next season. 🌱🍃🌿
