E + M in the Adirondacks | Part 3 - Creekside Designing

Nestled in our cozy schoolhouse Airbnb deep in the mountains, we designed by the creek, immersed in the soothing sounds of nature. Each piece began to come to life with all the foraged textures and florals gathered from the mountainside, capturing the essence of the landscape. With every detail carefully curated, we prepared for installation day, where the vision would finally take shape.

E + M in the Adirondacks | Part 2 - Clematis wrangling, Faith in the seasons, Sunchokes at sundown

Not before long we found ourselves deep in the mountains, where the real foraging began. Each day began with a sunrise forage. And when we thought we were done, sunset called us back out for another. Climbing trees, wrangling vines. It’s not as easy as it looks. In fact the Clematis hunt takes great patience. Solidago, Nutsedge that had turned for fall, billows of Autumn Clematis, Joe Pye W**d, Sunchoke, golden grasses galore. Everything I had envisioned in abundance. Along our travels, a Range Rover graveyard overgrown with wildflowers, and a rundown gas station with peculiar charm. We continued to fill our tiny schoolhouse Airbnb with our foragings.

There is a faith that you put in nature when you work heavily seasonally. One that not all floral designers are willing to have. And one that not all prospective clients are able to understand or agree to. But it’s become my second nature, and quite pivotal, for me to trust in the seasons to guide my designs. Before taking off for the trip I remember telling the employees at the flower market that I just trusted that the perfect forage would be waiting for us when we got to our destination. Nonetheless, it sure was.

E + M in the Adirondacks | Part 1 - The Journey, Sunflower Fields, Sights

In late September we traveled North and deep into the Adirondack Mountains to flower for Em + Mikah’s wedding celebration weekend.

The journey to a destination wedding is often my favorite part, and I try my best to document the behind the scenes of the creative process. Mainly on film as it allows me to stay more present in the current moment. I’ve been sitting on this set of images, mainly waiting to share for when I felt the capacity to describe in detail how special that week was.

Meandering through Northern New York, we stopped in hole-in-the-wall towns scouring for quirky gourds and squash that felt right for the design. I think we went to 6 different pumpkin patches in one day. Cruising down the interstate and coming across a pick-your-own sunflower field that basically begged us to turn into. We obliged. Sunny seed heads for the table and squash sculpture, check.

Then the first forage upon arrival. A sun soaked meadow with solidago and mountain fern. We started to fill our tiny schoolhouse Airbnb with our findings.

One of my favorite Spring celebrations last year, Max & Tova’s chic microwedding at Cape Cod. Guests cozied up in vintage style airstreams for the weekend then gathered for a snazzy pizza party nightcapped with disco dancing and a bonfire in Pj’s. A blend of quirky, wirey stems and more sculptural compositions around the space highlighted May’s best floral. Not to mention a pearled purse that definitely stole the show.

With a Chuppah this wild and grand, it only made sense to transform the ceremony space into a sultry, Mid-Century Modern-inspired lounge pit where guests could mingle and sip cocktails amidst the lush foliage throughout the night.

Genius dreamt up this fun concept and I couldn’t wait to see photos from the night when the lounge came to life. Looks like fun was indeed had 😎

On the rocks— some details of this naturalistic ceremony build for R & C a few years back (which I’m still quite fond of.) Rocks and driftwood foraged around their property combined with local grasses, lichen and flora. Had a really good workout that day 🪨 🪨🪨

Some favorite behind the scenes moments from production for M + S back in June. Couldn’t help but tote around with my camera to capture a mere glimpse at the amount of detailed design that goes into an event. Over 200 arrangements and 400 pears artfully carved and sculpted day-of all thanks to a killer floral team of 16. Transforming a tent for 300 people in one day is no small fete and this one will truly always live in my brain rent free.
